Photographer's comment: "Crazy light and stars over Samara, although the sun is down for more than 3 hours"

These appear to be noctilucent clouds, the highest clouds known on Earth, most commonly appearing during summer months above 50 degrees N/S at altitudes of 76,000 to 85,000 m (250,000 to 280,000 ft). They are typically too faint to be seen, except after sunset, while the observer is in the shadow of Earth while the upper reaches of the atmosphere are still illuminate by the sun.

Awesome photo.

Since I'm partial to BOS shots, I was happy to see this one:

Wow. I looked at that, and thought, "hmmm, the light in that shot looks an awful lot like a UA 777 takeoff I shot quite awhile ago". Turns out it is the exact same takeoff from 2 years ago!

Now how often does that happen to other people? Can't say it's ever happened to me before - at least certainly not with a 2-year-old airplane movement!

By the way, Chris, good to see you posting!

What can I say, it took me a little longer to edit that one than it should have.   Vik, I saw your shot when I cross searched the registration and I can't recall ever crossing paths with you. It was interesting to see your take on the same subject. Do you know how what focal length you shot at? I looked at the exif data on mine and it is 700mm on a crop body or 1120mm approximately. Just for comparison here are our two shots side by side:

Heh, no worries, I still have shots from 2010/2011/2012 that I haven't edited/uploaded yet. I just thought it was a similar shot, and was amazed to find it was the same takeoff. It's not often that I can recognize a specific takeoff/landing in someone else's shot. Guess the light was pretty awesome/unique!

I know I haven't met you, but I'm sure we've been at the same place at the same time (I assume you shot that from the hill?), probably more than once.

The shot was at 240mm (384mm equiv). But I had to crop in significantly as well, so actually around 360/576mm.

>> vikkyvik & waketurbulence, I think it's pretty cool that you both caught the same 777 taking off in great light conditions. Nice shots! It appears to me that only about 1 second went by between the two shots. I suspect you guys will meet some day & have a blast taking photos together.

Wow, that's a great photo showing a perfect example of St. Elmo's Fire!

Here's another recent photo that looks pretty cool. The photographer did a great job of panning the PC-12.
