I am a 13 year old Nikon user, but I will still give you my best advice. I have looked into Canon before, and with the aging 7D and the much praised 5D MKIII, the 5D MKIII is the clear winner. If you ever plan on shooting video, it excells at that. For stills, the 5D MKIII also wins. Depending on how much you want to spend, it could vary. If this was me, I would go for the 5D MKIII, because of its features. Many of the 7D's features, such as the CF storage, is outdated. Another option Would be to wait for the 7D MKII, which would come out later this year. Now onto your crop issue, the full frame sensor could help a lot with other subjects such as landscapes or portraits. Have you tried to use a 1.4xTC? That would help some, or you could shoot in full resolution and crop.

What conditions do you shoot in? Are you looking to take more low light photos? If yes, then the 5D3 might be a good option. I can get decent shots with my 100-400 on the 5D3; and in low light conditions. I never owned the 7D - I went from a 40D to the 5D3 but the advancement there in AF is fantastic.

I could wait and get the 7DMk2 and the 100-400Mk2, but I don't think I can justify two expensive purchases in quick succession thats why I am leaning towards upgrading the body now because I know when the new lens is out I am going to want it!
Quoting NZ107 (Reply 5):
I don't see much difference between buying one now and one later vs buying them both later!
Quoting NZ107 (Reply 5):
But as I showed above, using a cropped photo can be ok as well. Take a look at what focal lengths the majority of your photos are being taken with right now and see how big they are in the frame.
Quoting CX Flyboy (Reply 6):
I was just thinking that maybe despite losing the crop factor on the 7D, perhaps even after cropping the photo on the 5D the image quality is still better than on the 7D? What are the noise levels like on the two?
Quoting NZ107 (Reply 7):
I was hearing on here that the 7D was bad with noise but I wouldn't know.
Quoting CX Flyboy (Reply 8):
but partly because if I need much more ISO than that, then it isn't a day worth spent spotting!
Quoting FLPhoto (Reply 9):
If you were to upgrade, would you consider selling? If so, how much?
Quoting NZ107 (Reply 10):
Wow. Your eyes are going to be opened if you were to take a 5D3 out in the evening! Except I don't think any locations in HKG are too good for evening/low light photography..
