Help Choosing Camera - Fujifilm FinePix S2980

Sat Jun 22, 2013 8:43 pm

Hello!

As many of you, I love airplanes... I would like to start make photo spotting as a hobbie. The problem is that I don't want to spend much money. My budget is really small, and I know that i won't have awesome pictures as many that we can see here on Airliners. But what do you think about this camera?

Fujifilm finepix s2980 - Here are the specs: http://www.fujifilm.ca/products/digi...as/s/finepix_s2980/specifications/

Based on your experience, seeing the specs, what can I expect about the camera?

I already made a search about the specifications and what each value mean, but I dont know if it is "good" enough for airplane spotting. For example, do you think I can take photos like this one with that cam? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-G7GHAMoo0Z...g/DZzZEYT4-g8/s1600/Transaero3.jpg (I'm talking about the feel of movement, when planes are landing, the effect is really nice.)

Awaiting your responses. Sorry because the questions are probably stupid.

Thank you all.

Leugim87-
Welcome to spotting. Onto the camera now, the answers are no. I don't mean to make any hury feelings here, but the link that you attached was probably shot by a pro. Now, this being said, you can still take great pictures of planes. The movement that you liked, is caused by a trick called panning, which is when you set your shutter speed to a low setting (1/60th) and follow the plane. This is very difficult to do, and with a point and shoot it is even more difficult. What exactly is your budget? I would try to see if I could get a used older SLR camera if I were you. But, it isn't just the camera, it is what's behind it. Watch some videos, read some books, study up on how to take pictures. The secret to getting great pictures is to practice, experiment, and learn from your mistakes.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for your response!   That's good to see when people want to help us.

I'm talking about less than 200 euros... I think that there are no (used) reflex cameras in this range of price.

Do you know if in the camera I showed you we can change the shutter speed?

And one last question, how can I know if the camera can get a certain area knowing that I am x meters away the plane? For example, with a camera of a phone, you can't reach all the plane if you are near him. But if you have a good camera, you can reach it all, being in the same distance. What's the spec responsable for that? If I know, it's more an aspect I'll be alert in my next searches...

Thanks again!

Hey- I am also sorta new to this too (I am only 13), but I will add onto what I said earlier. The shutter speed most likely can be turned down, but I am not that formiliar to the Fijifilm. I wonder if you could get an old Nikon D40 for cheap... But, the zoom says how much your camera zooms in. Dont let this number fool you, because it can be very fuzzy past 10x.

Hope this helps,

But do you think is it possible to upload photos on airliners with a camera like the one I showed you?

With the right technique and editing almost any camera will get results good enough for here. Don't forget though, in A.net terms the original file is simply a template from which to work.

I had this accepted not so long ago, taken with a 2003 Olympus 3.2mp compact:

The Fuji should therefore be more-than-capable but the images may take a bit of work in Photoshop before they are ready for here.

If you are going to buy a P&S, I would recommend a Canon over fuji. I have both of them not the same models in this thread, I like the fuji but for AF speeds my canon is faster, since for aviation it would suit more. The fuji I have is 550EXR and canons I use are SX100IS and S100.
Double check on reviews for AF speed and accuracy for the fuji if it has improved for this model.
