Noise Reduction Plug-ins

Sun Jul 21, 2013 6:25 pm

Hello folks. I shot some images at SEA yesterday that were in fog and murk. Some are quite interesting shots I think, but they are a bit noisy given I had to use ISO400 to properly expsose them. Do you folks know of any good noise reducers that are free (thats kind of the key) and will work with CS2?

Thanks in advance,

John in SEA

Hi,

Try neatimage you can use it for free for images up to 1024x,Anything above you need to pay for it.
I find it works well when its used correctly.

Hi Mark! Thanks for the reply. I will give it a go. That is unfortunate about the size restrictions. Anyone else feel free to chime in!

There is also Noise Ninja plug-in.

But what you can also do if you have CS2 is process the noise in ACR (Adobe Camera Raw). For that, you need to change your preferences to allow Camera Raw to open your jpeg files. I have to say however that the more recent releases of ACR (in CS5 and CS6) are more performant on that matter.

I use Helicon Filter on a lot of my images. The only problems are that it blurs out grass, blurs detail on pitted cement and sometimes darkens reds. Keeping in mind these problems, I often will put the filtered image in a layer above the original and use the eraser tool to decide which regions I use of each image. Helicon Filter

Hi Mark,

I downloaded NeatImage as well as the others that David and Patrick suggested. I liked NeatImage best and I am using that. However, I have one issue. The preview of the area to be filtered is only sizing to 768x683. Is that the area being foltered or is the entire 1024x683 image being filtered?
