Advice On New Nikon

Thu Aug 01, 2013 2:38 pm

In a few weeks time, i'm looking at trying to upgrade to a higher spec Nikon Body (currently using the D3100 with a 55-300mm Nikor lens) Just wondering what peoples thoughts and experiences with the D7100 are? Haven't seen to many shots with it, so just wondering how good the image clarity etc is?

Cheers

Image quality depends mainly on the lens.

I guess then things like full frame vs crop frame, high ISO performance, resolution of the sensor and AF performance don't matter much.

I don't think the D7100 is full frame, is it? The higher ISO performance may not be a factor if you your not shooting very low light level images.

Not for this site, no. A Nikon D70 with a good lens will get photos uploaded here, in the hands of a good photographer.

Guys, WTF. He's asking about the D7100, not hear the old 'upgrade glass first' debate.

Same old replies, yes glass is more important than body, but body to body also makes difference(otherwise guys buying higher end bodies must be stupid as per some of the posters, who themselves may be using expensive cameras).
I don't buy cameras for this site, for this site even a point and shoot could work.
Coming to D7100,
the D7100 has the af motor, cls system, two control dials, far superior AF system, better sensor, AF fine tune compared to an entry level D3100, also better body construction and weather sealing.

Thanks for the (eventual) feedback guys. Seems like a good piece of kit. Debating on this or saving a bit more for the D600.

Dylan, if you upgrade to D600, you'll need new lenses. And full frame lenses are not cheap (compared to cropped sensor DSLR lenses).

Ah, thanks for that afterburner, i didn't know that! So a Nikor 55-300 wouldn't be much use on a D600 then?

Cheers

You can use all AF-S lenses on a D600. Obviously, it will blank out the corners of your images in FX mode.

The D600 also has a crop sensor option to use your 55-300 as it was designed by using a reduced number of pixels on the sensor. Kind of defeats the object of buying a FF but it is an available option.
If you was right..................I'd agree with you

Nikon 55-300mm is a DX lens. It is designed for Nikon DX (cropped sensor) cameras like your D3100. D600 is an FX camera. It needs FX lenses like Nikon AF-S 70-300mm. yes we can use DX lenses on FX cameras. However, like TristarAtLCA said, the images produced will be dark around the corners.

Thanks guys. Looks like I'll go for the D7100 and keep hold on the 55-300mm

Much appreciated
