Attention PHL Spotters, A Few Questions.

Sun Aug 11, 2013 11:35 am

My father and I are both pilots, and he is turning 65 this month and will have his last flight after a great military and commercial career. He flies the A330 for US, and I was wondering if anyone could snap a picture of his last takeoff or landing or even both. He's not sure when it will be yet; it could be as early as this Thursday, so this will take a little coordination.

Also, I run a camera and lens rental company in Pittsburgh, and if you needed some big Canon or Nikon glass, I could arrange for that.

Thank you very much,
Rick

If I don't have class, I could get over to PHL since it's less than 30 minutes from where I am for school. As for camera, I have a Canon 6D with 70-200 f4L IS.

Thank you Len90, I'll see if he knows any more about his schedule. If you are free, would you like a 300 f/2.8 IS to compliment your 70-200? Do you think the 400 would be too tight? It's also twice the weight at 12lbs.

Thanks,
Rick

This week's schedule sucks. 9-4 most days with 9-3 on Wednesday.

As for the location, there were a lot of police around last week. I spoke to one LEO when I was there and they have come to understand the hobby but don't want such "long lenses". The 400 definitely would be attracting too much attention, and I fear the 300 would be the same. I quickly tested the location using my 70-200 and it was more than enough for me. I was getting tight on an E190 at 180mm. Unless you want a closeup of the nose or front half...

However, before I worry about that. Find out your dad's schedule and hopefully it coincides with my school schedule. From what I have seen on the flghtaware a lot of the PHL US Air A330s arrive between 13:30 and 15:30. I could be wrong though.

Thank you Len90, I will have some schedule info today. Copy the LEO; 70-200 should be enough if an E-190 is tight at 180mm.

Guess he's due to land today from Manchester at 1:50pm. I know you probably can't do that, but it's not his last flight anyway. Don't know what happened, last I heard he was sitting in PHL on reserve yesterday. Last flight may not be till the 22nd or 23rd now. Thanks for being flexible, and I'll let you know more.

Look for a IM too.

Thanks,

Rick

Rick, send me a message when you get the details. I know a few PHL regulars who can possibly help you out.

Thanks Cary, I should be finding out more in the next couple of days. Would any of them need/want gear?
Thanks,

Cary: Think you could try getting me in contact with a few of those PHL regulars as well? Was thinking about going out there no matter what next week on Thursday for a little plane spotting and photography. Would really like to try meeting up with some people. If you could help me out that would be awesome!

Rick: Hopefully your dad is flying on Thursday. Only have class from 10-12 so I could be there as early as 12:30/12:45. So far weather looks to be pretty nice. Mostly sunny with highs in the mid/upper 80s.

Thanks Len and Cary. It's not firm yet, but a Friday evening departure with a Sunday afternoon return next week is how it's looking now.

Just so you know how unique this would be, pilots at most airlines get a nice, big picture of the plane they retired on taking off or landing, but who is flying it is anyone's guess. To actually be flying the plane in your retirement photo would be extraordinary. In fact, if you wanted to set up some kind of business taking fini flight pics of all the US pilots that are retiring, and there's a lot, I would think you could make some pretty good money doing it for the time involved.

Thanks again,
Rick

My suggestion is to sign up at http://phlairline.com/chatter or the corresponding FB page and introduce yourself - that's where the PHL spotters hang out. There usually isn't more than one or two (if any) people spotting on a weekday in the Summer, unless something special is coming. The lighting is pretty bad for most of the day at PHL until Fall/Winter.

Rick: Friday evening I definitely won't be around and it will be iffy for me to get out there on Sunday afternoon.

Cary: Can you explain some more about the lighting. The time I went out to PHL it was overcast so I couldn't really gauge the lighting too well.

Sorry for the delay, I've been driving from the beach all day. Thanks for the suggestion Cary, I will look into that asap.

Len, those look to be the times he will be taking off and landing, so I will try to get some backup with the great source Cary provided. Regardless of whether or not you can snap some pics, I greatly appreciate your time and help.

Next time either of you are on a Southwest flight, please poke your head up and see if I'm your F/O. 44, 5'9", 175 lbs, brown hair, ugly white guy. That should get you in the ballpark.

Thanks,
Rick

I am not flying right now Len, I'm out on medical for a few more weeks. If I wasn't, I could jump seat over to PHL and not have to bother my Philly brethren for the pics.

Shoot me a msg here or on phlairline or PM me if needed

Thanks everyone. Here are his final flight numbers: Friday #754 (6:20pm) departure, Sunday #755 (2:00pm) arrival.
I did send an email to Paul at PHLairline and he is going to try make some time too.
Next time I'm in Philly, I hope all of you let me buy you a nice dinner for your help.

He just flew past my house in nice blue skies. I got a few decent shots, I'm sure Paul got some on short finals.

Email me your email address and I'll send along what I have after I edit them.

Rick,

Sorry I couldn't get out there. Classmates decided to schedule a study group and prevented me from getting out to PHL. I owe you. Let me know when you are back flying and going in/out of PHL.
