Help With Photos

Thu Aug 22, 2013 2:33 am

Hello All,
I am 14 years old and new to Aviation photography and was wondering if anyone could help me out. I use a Nikon D3200 with a 70-300mm VR. I have seen many photos taken with the Nikon D3200 on many well known Aviation Photography sites. I have submitted a few photos but they have been denied. Am I doing something wrong?

My photos can be found here:

Also wound anyone recommend I get a UV Filter?

Thanks in advance

Maybe you could post a couple of examples of photos you've submitted and had rejected on here rather on Flickr? What are the main rejection reasons you're getting? It's not necessarily anything with technique, it might be something in your workflow.

They aren't needed with digital.

Hi the most obvious thing looking at your images are the halo's round the aircraft. This can be caused by the use of the Shadow/Highlight feature in Photoshop or similar packages, also aggressive use of curves can also cause this. There are plenty of tutorials about, there is one on a.net somewhere and I have a beginners one here that might help.

I personally would like to see the rejected images and the reasons as well. Once that is known corrections could be made and acceptances will follow.

It might not be a matter of doing something wrong, but rather tweaking your post processing.

Do you have the Active D-Lighting feature turned on in the D3200 shooting settings?

I have a feeling that halo effect is being caused by this.

Yes, Active D Lighting is on. Should it be off? Also some pictures I recently uploaded were edited and thats where some of the halos have come from.

Here are some more recent images.

Hmm the Southwest shot looks like it should be decent. What do you use for editing your pictures? If you use photoshop, there is a walkthrough on the site that can help you edit your pictures correctly.

I would turn it off, this feature can induce a halo behind the subject in the frame in my experience.

I found on my D3000 it adds extra processing and reduces the number or available shots in the cache. Not sure if this is the case on the newer D3200.

The allegiant 757 looks good except for the size. Go back to the basic file, edit it according to the upload and see how it looks. The united 737 needs to be leveled. Lighting on your SW N670SW looks poor to me.

Definitely turn off the Active D lighting on your body. Sit down and try to work on the united 737 and Allegiant using the walkthrough. I would also like to see you work on the Delta touching down before the allegiant shot.

Also, do you have any examples that were rejected?

Upload them to the queue and then post the links so we can get an idea of how they look before screening. You can also post pre screening questions in the feedback section.
