Nikon 70-300mm - Guidance And Opinions Please?

Sat Aug 24, 2013 12:12 am

Hi all!

I have a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens, which I purchased brand new in the spring.

Who else uses this lens? What are the ideal settings to use under ideal conditions?

Thanks! Your help is very much appreciated.

Nikon 70-300mm - Guidance And Opinions Please?

Hello, I've been using the 70-300VR for over 4-years now. As with most lenses, when shooting in ideal conditions, I've found that optimal sharpness is achieved at around f8-9 with VR at Normal Mode (YMMV), unless you're panning, then switch it to Active Mode. That's pretty much it.

Also forgot to add that the optimal zoom range would be from 70-200mm. Sharpness is a hit or miss above 200mm and anything above 250mm is pretty much useless for aviation photo websites.

Very good lens for the price. Best at F8. Not so heavy as 80-400 or 120-400 lenses therefore easy to use and carry. Crop 1.5 gives you 105-450mm so if you have a 18-105mm kit lens, you covered from 18 till 450mm.
With best regards from Almaty

Love this lens. I pair it with the Sigma 150-500OS.

Best shot at f/8. Sharpness decreases a little once you pass 250mm but only problematic if you worry about acceptance criteria. My shots past 250mm are just fine, but then again I don't look at my photos @ 200% like most here do.

Hi all,

I used the lens for a short while on my D700. IQ is very mediocre. As others pointed out, it's OK up to 200mm, especially when stopped down, but after that it's substandard. Shot wide open at 300mm I can see softness without having to zoom in at all. Stopped down at f/8-f/9 is passable but still soft-ish. For the money is OK. Unfortunately, there's no good alternative in this price range / focal length range. The Tamron 70-300 VC is well regarded but it seems to have similar IQ to the Nikon one, including the weak performance at 300mm.

Not quite true, both at 300mm and cropped:

Still, more than normal editing needed and I don't think the printed results will be great.

This is my favorite spotting lens. I always had good pictures in the 70-200/250 range. I never had better quality pictures in the 300mm range. I have used few other lenses like 18-105, 18-300 but I feel 70-300 has faster focus and is definitely lighter than 18-300. I like the 18-300 for the flexibility it gives for the range. If I am going solely for spotting, I am not leaving the 70-300.
