I am a Las Vegas resident who regularly spots McCarran Airport. I take 100's of photos every week. I have shot from every angle and from all times of day. You could say I am well versed in where to go and what times of day each location is best.
Personally I love shooting here, We are blessed with 4 great airports, each drawing very different aircraft and requiring excellent equipment to capture the magnificent foreground and backgrounds that allow for wonderful composition. They are North Las Vegas; Henderson Executive; Nellis Air Base and McCarran Airport. Each airport offers very different aircraft and the amount of traffic is amazing. I take dramatic aircraft images and each airport has locations to accommodate. The good news, only once was I questioned about my presence and when I showed him the pictures in the camera he actually encouraged me to keep coming back for more, he was very impressed. Please , do not worry about security here, Las Vegas is hear for our guests.
I would love to assist you, need to know what types of aircraft you like to shoot. The only type that is rare here is the Avanti II
. No operators left in the SouthWest. This is Pilatus country and the paint is amazing.
Definitely go to McCarran.com/arrivals or departures to the daily list and flightaware.com/live to get an hourly update on flights and times, you can actually track a particular flight.
I highly recommend the Tropicana & Paradise location. It is a demolished shopping center owned by the airport, posted for vagrants and homeless encampments. Park under the unused billboard for shade and the aircraft will approach from the east. Tis is the most incredible location as you can get within a 100 feet of the approaching aircraft using runway 19. used quite a bit by 737 traffic and all Executive traffic. You are in for a treat. e there between 11:00 and 2:00PM for best exposure. Lens I recommend and use 70-200mm, no filter in the summer and f/8 @ 1/800 and ISO 100. Shut off any camera enhancements such as sharpening, D lighting comp = 0.
Welcome to Las Vegas
