A380's At LAX - In N Out Or Imperial Hill?

Wed Sep 25, 2013 8:28 pm

Will be in LAX late October and want to shoot some A-380 arrivals. Wondering if one runway is used more often than the other. Are my chances better at Imperial Hill or the park by In N Out? Or is it 50/50? If I get a scanner before heading there, does anyone know what tower frequency to tune to to hear instructions to the arriving flights?

I believe they are only (or at least mostly) landing on the 24s, so the In'n'Out would be your best option.

Something to do with taxiways and wingtip clearances, I think. Even if they're parked on the south side, I've only seen them taxi over to the north side for takeoff. And I've only seen them land on the north side as well, far as I can remember.

Last 2 times I have been out there, in February and May of this year, every A-380 got the north complex 24R. This time of year the In and Out probably is the not your best option, because the shot probably will be backlit. You need to be on the south side of the runway. Burger King parking lot on 98th and Airport is a good option.

...I will agree – north side is your best option – qantas comes in the morning, too early probably for when you are here, but a second one typically comes between 9 and 10...korean also arrives in the morning, twice, if what I saw recently was regular...then you'll have singapore and air france around noon to 1 or so and then there could be an additional air france...

Lufthansa flies A380 to san francisco, but not LAX – here you'll find the 747-8 arriving between noon and one...

...now British Airways have just started using A380 to LA, but they arrive after dark....

...and that's roughly the way it is...

Don't forget China Southern, which comes in in the evenings.

What about from that huge parking lot, Lot C?

And, speaking of LAX, does anyone know if with the new Int'l Terminal open planes are still parking at gates in that alley that is visible from the corner of the parking garage? or have they all been moved to the other side?

Best time for A380s into LAX, IMO. Those were the only ones I used to catch when I lived in LA, because of my classes, but I honestly wouldn't have bothered for any others even if I had the time.

And yes, In-N-Out for sure.

Cheers

Last week, Qantas landed few times on the south side by Proud Bird. I was camping in the long term parking lot C waiting for them and to my surprise they've used south side
That was first for me. Never seen A380 going to the south side before.

If memory serves (which it might not), I think they exclusively takeoff from the north side, because to takeoff from the south side, they would have to use some weird, long taxi route.

For landing, I think both sides are available, but as you said, I can't recall seeing one land on the south side.

But of course, there is this beautiful photo of Qantas landing on the south side:

thanks for all the valuable info everyone - looking forward to my trip - up here in Seattle we don't get the whale and probably never will. But I did have plenty of fun over at BFI during the 748 and 788 flight testing days.

vikkivik – "...Don't forget China Southern, which comes in in the evenings...."

...you're absolutely right – how could i possibly miss that, when I have made such an effort for those planes...B-6136 – B-6137 – B-6138 – B-6139 – B-6140.....
In fact, FlightAware are using my picts for four of them and I'm hoping they will pick the fifth soon.... : )

...bruce – it seems they're using all the new terminals now...but the older terminals are still in use....

...dcaviation – it does happen now and then that the south side is used by the A380s...

...vikkyvik – ...no, I have seen qantas take off from the south side...and I have seen air france moving from south side to depart from north side – while they were working on the fields on the south side, making the taxiing very long...

The picture you show made me go "WTF!!!" – it is near identical to a shot I took in the very early days of the A380s history here in S Cal – unbelievable! – ...and I had to think here...yes, it was a Qantas I shot...and I took a couple of additional ones showing the enormous wake swirls...unbelievable likeness!

Takeoff and landing can occur on both the North and South sides for the A380. South complex activity may be less likely however.

They do takeoff from the south side, but it's very rare- I've only seen it once myself. Arrivals from QF occasionally use the south side also but if I was out for the A380 specifically, I'd hang out by 24R because Imperial Hill arrival shots are pretty iffy with the variety of obstructions that can get into a shot of a plane on the ground (haze from that truck loading bay, telephone wires, trees, grizzly bears, alien spaceships, etc.)

I'm yet to see them take off from the south side. I'm not as luck as some

Those are my two biggest obstacles from Imperial Hill. Many a shot has been ruined.....

I think they added more telephone wires in 2011 or 2012, too, that are higher up and block more than they used to.

Here is some more. Whenever I plan a trip to a "foreign" airport, I like to check the photos on this site (what a concept, right?). (step one) Looking at the photo and with google maps, I try and get a shooting location based on the available data. (step two) In this case, I would site search "a380 lax 24r" and "a380 lax 25l". You will then see that 24r has 4 times as many pictures as 25l.

24r - 74 photos

24l - 14 photos

25r - 6 photos (2 of the a380)

25l - 20 photos
Slower traffic, keep right
