Nikon Mount: Wide Angle Lens Help

Sun Oct 27, 2013 12:44 am

Hi All!

I am looking to purchase a wide angle lens, with plans to use it for aircraft interiors and cockpits, for my Nikon D3100.

The problem? I am stuck between three choices...

1) http://www.amazon.com/Tokina-11-16mm...sr=8-1&keywords=tokina+11-16+nikon

2) http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-10-20mm-...834527&sr=8-1&keywords=sigma+10-20

3) http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-10-20mm-...834527&sr=8-3&keywords=sigma+10-20

Does anyone on A.net have experience with any of these lenses? I am looking for advice, and would really appreciate it!

Thank you!

Calvin

Yes, Tokina...well made lenses, use it for tight corporate jet lavs and sometimes cockpits...Sigmas OK but my experience has the Tokina some of the most underated optics going & and well priced...next best thing to OEM Nikon.

Calvin,

I use a Sigma 10-20mm and love it. I've 100's of photos taken with it on the database. Just ensure you test it if you get one as there have been issues with upper-left corner sharpness (mine was replaced free of charge as it suffered the problem), other than that, it's a great lens. Which version to go far is up to you, whether you need the wider aperture or not.

I have the Sigma 10-20 on my 650D. Love it. Produces sharp as hell images and hardly any chromatic aberration. Absolutely fantastic lens. Beautifully made, too.

Buy a used Nikon 12-24, one of my favorite lenses.

Thanks for the responses!

I was doing some more research on the Sigma 10-20, and discovered that it has some "fall-off" (vignetting).

Is this easily removed by shooting at f8? If not, can I easily deal with it in Photoshop? Could I produce un-edited images with this lens that could be submitted and accepted onto A.net, at 10mm?

Maybe the new version of the Tokina 11-16 is a better option?

Thanks in advance,

Calvin

Most lenses have some vingetting to a degree. At f/8, it's hardly noticeable and by f/10, it's disappeared. You can remove it in Photoshop if needed, but unless you have a uniform sky where it becomes noticeable, it's not required.

You know what a.net is like, they require minor tweaks at least. Editing with this lens is no different to any other lens you have.

I can't compare it to the Tokina as I've never used one, but I'm more than happy with my Sigma 10-20. I've been using one for 5 years now and have only good things to say about it. A few recent examples;
