Usually don't have spotters outside of EWR, especially when they land 22 like they were today. The only real spotting location, and you will be approached by cops, is the IKEA lot and that is only good for 4 landings. When landing 22 the only option is to hide in the long term lot and you will have to pay even if the cops throw you out. In addition to the 22, I believe the weather at EWR was cloudy and nothing special that I know of was due in, so I highly doubt anyone was there.

IF it was PHL, the weather today was pretty nice and there usually are people out there every day.

What reason do they give for telling you to leave? It is not illegal to take aviation pictures. You would think the police would have better things to do than harass spotters. When I see posts like this I am so thankful for how good the spotters are treated here in Houston, (IAH and HOU).

From the PANYNJ web site:

"The Port Authority reserves the right to restrict videotaping and photography at its airports. Videotaping in runway and taxiway areas at all airports is prohibited at all times. Videotaping and photographing at security checkpoint areas operated by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration is prohibited without the consent of the TSA."

The IKEA lot is private property, so they can restrict photography there all they want. Most of the rest of EWR is completely hemmed in by development, so again private property. There are a few street locations, but they're mediocre at best with tons of overhead wires and you'll still be run off if the cops see you. EWR has some interesting traffic, but it's not really much fun to take pictures there.

Oh, and speaking of the parking lot len90 referenced, if you lay low you can get shots until someone sees you, but it costs something like $18 to park there even if you're only there for 15 minutes.

Exactly JohnJ. To me EWR is a shoot what you want and that is it type of airport. If say I want to catch a SA UA772 I'll take just that and maybe one or two planes around it. I won't sit there for an extended amount of time.

At PHL I have sat outside with my car pulled off the side of the road in the grass for three hours straight and was not approached by a single police officer. That will probably never happen at Newark.

I went to EWR several weeks ago with the sole intent of catching the Singapore Airlines SIN-EWR flight before it ends. They were using 22L that day, but I didn't feel like paying the $18 parking charge for the long-term lot. After some searching on Google Earth, I found a spot, but it was far from ideal and I was watching over my shoulder the whole time. I got my shot and maybe five others, but really not enjoyable.

I need to get to PHL outside the terminals one of these days. I've gotten some shots on here from inside the terminal, usually without hassle. However, on one occasion the driver of one of those electric carts stopped and told me photography is illegal at the airport.

John,

Hog Island Road the spot to go for Philly. It runs around the perimeter of the back of the airport. Park on the grass just off the road (across from the perimeter fence) and you can shoot all the arrivals you want. Check out phlairline.com for a spotting location map.

EWR actually is pretty nice with taking pictures inside the terminal. I had no issues in the UA express loop and the B6/WN/AC gates as well this summer. I had planned on trying to get the SIA A345 but my school schedule comes first.

Will do, thanks for the tips. I'm a US Airways loyal flyer, so through there all the time. I have to get my Chik-Fil-A fix somehow!
