Pre & Post Screening--- Comments & Critics Welcome

Mon Feb 06, 2012 12:36 am

Seems my old thread is locked up, and that one is getting too long anyway, so open up this new thread.

Got two rejected for dark, these are sunset time pics, actually sun was below or almost all below horizon at that time, so I want to keep the acurate light atomesphere of that moment, I did not brighten them up too much, that won't be natrual. Do you think I should appeal for these two? Thanks!

Then here is today's new upload, backlit! what do you think? Any chance?

Thanks in advance!

No, they could stand brightening.

With a little more contrast, perhaps.

Yes, the first two I screened, there is quite a bit of room on the histogram on the right side, and a corresponding contrast adjustment on the left will boost the contrast.

Agree with Dana on the third - needs some more contrast, the blacks are milky.

Both a touch dark, but very harsh contrast on the first.

Thanks Dana!

I had a few more rejections for soft, so I am backing off and upload more 1024 size pictures. Here are a few, please comment on them. Thanks in advance!

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...eady/s1328576958.112dsc_6202-4.jpg Still dark? sunset time picture, see the light is from underneath, I want to keep it a bit dark to show what it should be at that moment.

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...ady/b1328578933.0329dsc_6862-3.jpg Still soft?

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...ady/p1328580813.4274dsc_4335-3.jpg Don't know what to say about this one, very humid day, low contrast? too bright?

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 5):
Still dark?

If you read the rejection guide, you'll notice that dark rejections aren't given solely for underexposed images, but also for images with really poor light (i.e. backlit, etc..), so don't always assume a dark rejection is for underexposure. The UA isn't underexposed, but the light is difficult, and it is somewhat noisy.

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 5):
Still soft?

Should be ok, but color seems a little green/cyan.

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 5):

Yes, too bright. Contrast looks ok, but again, not very good light overall.

Cheatlines area always tough, but I think they should both be ok. The Pilatus looks a touch bright.

Thanks again, Dana.

These two were taken at sunset time, I try to frame the Chicago Skyline in, also it was getting quite dark, light condition was not great, but I want to hear your comments.

Both a bit dark, and think the sky line is a bit too distant to be compelling enough to justify the centering, at least on the first. The second is probably good enough for centering.

Thanks Dana.

Just got a few rejections, some I could not understand, please help.

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...ame=g1330059840.7408dsc_4253-2.jpg for "Harsh sky contrast"
The sky is blank, I don't know where is the contrast from.

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...ame=u1330043570.9181dsc_5588-3.jpg for "color", I don't think it is yellow or blue.

http://www.airliners.net/procphotos/...name=q1330041388.196dsc_5580-2.jpg for "windows a tad soft", I guess that is because the flares from the sunlight is right on those windows.

What do you think? Thanks!

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 13):

Well, that's pretty much it. The sky is washed out, which give the image the harsh contrast/backlit feel.

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 13):
for "color", I don't think it is yellow or blue.

There's a cyan/green tint.

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 13):
for "windows a tad soft"

Marginal rejection, just give the fuselage a light pass of sharpening and you should be fine.

Dana, thanks. Here are two re-submissions.

This 738 was rejected for a green tint, so I tried to correct that, now is better?

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...ady/p1330867384.7924dsc_6331-8.jpg

and this AA MD-80 was rejected for level and wrong category, actually I found the level is difficult on this one, here is the new upload, please comment, thanks!

Whites look neutral, but the sky is still a strange hue... were you shooting through glass?

Looks dark and maybe needs a touch of ccw rotation. What category had you selected?

yes, the Jamaica was through glass, so the color is difficult.

The AA MD-80 was selected for dark, although sun was not totally below horizon yet, so that was wrong. It was also suggested to give a bit CW rotation, I just did maybe 1 degree of CW rotation to it to get this resubmission. Actually, it should be leveled to the horizon, although horizon itself could not be framed in.

Hi there, just got 2 rejections for level, which I think might be questionable.

This first one, if look at the building, may need a bit CW rotation, but if look at the runway, then it is very level.

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...311_r1330784722.7108dsc_8899-3.jpg

Then this second one, the building in the background is NOT parallel to the runway, so it does not look level if just look at that, if to make it look level with some CCW rotation, then the approach angle is wrong.

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...20311_u1330783006.2465dsc_8938.jpg

So what do you think? Thanks!

I didn't screen these, but will offer my opinions.

The first one is a bit tricky but on the balance I'd say it needs CW rotation.

The second one is in clear need of CCW rotation based on the buildings leaning to the right. I almost slid out of the right side of my chair looking at it.

Always look at verticals first, before horizontals (unless of course the horizontal reference is the horizon).

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 18):
Then this second one,

Same thing, with no other reference, the leaning building in the background will indicate CCW rotation.

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...ady/d1332030643.8299dsc_9134-2.jpg sharp enough?

http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/b...ady/v1332037162.3743dsc_5552-2.jpg Level?

Many thanks!

Thank Dana. Time to re-submit some revised pictures, please comment on them. These were taken around sunset time, so warm light. The united Express actually was after the sunset, so maybe a bit dark? I am concerned with soft/oversharpen, contrast, etc. Thanks!

Sharpness seems ok; the light is borderline at best for the two AA, and probably makes the UA a no-go.

Quoting powwwiii (Reply 26):
if these still have vignetting

AA top left corner is darker than the rest, and there seems to be some halos around the aircraft. The DL definitely still has vignetting and is maybe a bit soft. UA still looks strange for color...not sure if it's too green or what..
