Pre-Screening / My Images From Ltba

Sun Sep 16, 2012 9:43 pm

As I want to have some contribution to the db badly, I am uploading many photos and ask your precious feedback. I decided I should have them in one topic rather than starting several new topics.

Here is the first one. Thanks a lot for your comments.

Thats a pretty good first shot although has some issues to keep it from being accepted. Firstly the shot is back lit meaning that the light is not shining directly on the side of the the aircraft that you are shooting at and the aircraft is way too low in the frame. I will let a screener comment on the quality.

The bad angle of the light pretty much cancels out any other concern. You're unlikely to get backlit images accepted unless the subject is very rare, or the backlighting is intentional to achieve an effect. Neither is the case here.

OK, thanks a lot for the feedback. Actually I was pretty sure that photo would get positive comments and I am surprised. But these comments definitely will change the way I look into aviation photography and I will pay more attention to detail for sure.

Here's another one.

There's nothing wrong with the photo - it doesn't meet A.net criteria, but personally I think it's a nice photo.

However, with that one and the Azerbaijan shot, it looks to me like you're using a heck of a lot of noise reduction - probably far more than is necessary.

Yes, your right. I use a lot of Noise Reduction cause I get a lot of "soft" criticism and I still do not know how to decide what amount is appropriate and how much is too much.

Of course I respect high quality standarts of a.net, but I still wonder in which aspect that image would be considered "not good enough" and is there anything that can be done for this image to edit better.

Thanks a lot for your appreciation and feedback.

Oh... I now see that I misunderstood. A330 shot is backlit and that's a rejection. I get that.

What about the Azerbaijan shot? Do you think that might be accepted with a better edit?

Best.

Possibly, but can't say for sure without seeing that better edit. Color looks a bit off as well.

You're starting at the wrong end. Start with NO noise reduction, then add if necessary.

The less, the better. Too much NR erases detail, and gives a photo a sort of plastic look. It's the first thing I noticed when I opened your Azerbaijan shot.

Plus, noise reduction softens the image. It doesn't make it less soft.

Thanks for the feedback. I used the word "soft" instead of oversharpened. It seems I have a tendency towards oversharpening and was trying to overcome this by noise reduction. Its obvious I need to edit better.

Ah, gotcha. Don't worry, there's a steep learning curve when you first start uploading here.

But yeah, the less processing you have to do, the better. So instead of "de-sharpening" through NR, just don't sharpen as much in the first place.

Hi,

I think I can see oversharpening (for example, check the space between the wing and the extended flaps), and there's a dust spot visible under both the left-and righthand engine areas.

Hi Bogac
The dustspots can be eliminated relatively easy in Photoshop by using the Clone Tool.
PS there are dustspots under both the engine areas in the photo - I overlooked the other initially

Hi,
There's a darker area immediately below the exhaust of the RH engine (viewer's viewpoint). Probably a remainder of the editing proces.
It's quite visibly - even without equalizing the image (check the Editing page on this website).
In general, equalizing your image will pop up the dust spots and other artifacts.

A little soft/heat hazed, and looks like you applied a fair amount of noise reduction. Also no need for a 4:3 ratio in this in instance (3:2 would be better), but that would not be a rejection reason.

Aside from sharpness and dust spot, I'd say the previous edit was better. The new one has halos, colors are weird (compare it to the previous edit), and looks like a lot of NR again. Still a bit soft.

I'd suggest you try some edits without any NR and see how they look.

Quoting Bogac (Reply 30):

Like I said, don't see a problem with the editing of the second; the first has soft halos around the whole of the aircraft. If you're not applying NR, then perhaps it has something to do with the masking you are doing.

I've indicated how far the halo extends from the fuselage; you can see the sky is a different color for a few pixels extending from the fuselage.

I am not so sure about the YL-BBO but I feel I am very close for the TC-ATH (AtlasJet) below. Please use words such as magnificient, nail, brilliant etc, but not soft, halo, edit...

Thanks.

All right. As these were my closest images to "acceptable", I don't want to mess up :P. Cause you know, there's a pretty thin line between slightly soft and oversharpened.

Sadly I am at work now and I'll have to wait until I go back home.

Atlastjet might have a chance, the Baltic will always been borderline because you can't really fix heat haze with sharpening.
