Pre-Screening, Need Help!

Tue Sep 25, 2012 6:24 pm

I need some help, I haven't had a photo approved yet. This photo was taken with a Canon 5d Mark III and 70-200mm f2.8 II. I'm using Adobe Camera RAW 7.1 and Photoshop CS6. I did some sharpening in Camera RAW, then reduced the szie to 1200x800 in Photoshop, selected the aircraft then did UnSharp Mask 100%, Radius 2.0 and Threshold 0.

I know I have the equipment, but post-processing for Airliners.net is much different than anything else I've ever done. I could use any help I can get.

Thanks

I think radius 2.0 is too much.

Skip the sharpening in Adobe Camera RAW altogether and - in Photoshop - instead of unsharp mask, try smart sharpen, radius 0.3 pix, 50% or so on the reduced size image.

WAY too much.

I typically use Unsharp Mask at radius 0.3 or 0.4, 80-90%, and threshold 1.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

I am not sure about the first one but the second seems out of focus.

Always nice to see a Seattlite, so first, welcome.

My first reaction is that the color is odd on both. I think that might be the color space you are using to process, or perhaps that you are shooting in a certain camera mode that dictates a color profile? They look dark and green. You can fix this in Camera Raw/Digital Photo Pro/Lightroom, whatever you use to process the raw images.

The citation is better than the 767 for sharpness, but it's also a bit dark and very high contrast, the darks are really dark.

The 767 looks overprocessed, as if it were soft to begin with and then sharpened up quite a bit.

Agreed.

Since you have CS6, try doing three or four passes of Smart Sharpen on the settings 96 / 0.2 / Gaussian. That will get you pretty close, I think to judging where you need to be.

You can also use regular USM at similar settings (threshold 0), but you'll have to select what you want to sharpen more carefully.

Here's another one I'd like to throw out there. Sorry if I'm being annoying, but I'd really like to get one uploaded.

I can see them, but I do think they were not showing when I first looked last night.

The bizjet looks pretty good to me. Maybe a bit low in the frame?

UPS looks better but the lettering still looks odd. Maybe it is just one of those troublesome fonts, though.

The Pilatus looks pretty good also. Maybe a bit soft.

Thanks for pointing out the bizjet, fixed that. Also sharpened the Pilatus some more. Not sure what to do with the UPS 767, the letters are like that no matter what I do.

Any other feedback?
