Post Screening - Night Ramp Color

Tue Nov 13, 2012 7:33 am

I really don't know what else to do with these. I'm getting rejections for "yellow tint". Everybody knows ramp lighting is not pure white, I don't see how these shots look different than they looked in person. I shot them in raw, so I have the option of converting in different white balances but I can't find one that looks better. How else can I adjust the color to meet the standards here and yet not look fake?

This picture doesn't have much of anything in it that is pure white:

These do show a normally white plane but under these lights..... I dont know what else to do.

That's the one thing you'll have to do I'm afraid. This site likes the white balance to be as close to white as possible. With sodium lighting, this means the photos won't look like the night you took them. Just try and remove the yellow cast as best you can.

For your first picture: try to use the wings as a reference for white. It might work,

Arndt

PS: The cars in the backround also work...

The good news is you shot in raw and can at least attempt to fix it. I have too many from my days on the ramp before I became wise to shoot in raw that are only shot in jpg and not salvageable.
Seems to me that for night shots here you need to have the white balance very cool. Might be wise to pull up some other accepted night shots and try to match the white balance temperatures. At least then you have a point of reference to what has been accepted.
Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.

OK, How about an opinion on this edited version. Is the color better? I used the top of the fuselage above the windshield as the white point since the paint there is obviously white.

It looks overdone to me personally (since I don't like unrealistic-looking night shots), but I have to imagine A.net would probably accept it.

You could get away with less extreme white-balancing, though. Some orange/yellow is acceptable.

Great shot, by the way.

I see it now, it does look a little bright but I'm not sure if its crossed the line to too bright. - I'm looking at it on a different monitor. I've got to get a new monitor for my system, just waiting for some Black Friday deals.

Just to be clear, I'm not talking about brightness, just color.
