Post Screening: Contrast Flat?

Tue Nov 13, 2012 7:00 pm

Hello screeners/members,

I got my two below photos rejected for having a flat contrast. As I disagree with this I would like your opinion:

Hi Roger,

Both look a bit 'milky', and the colour looks off to me on the Air Berlin (the red looks a bit pink).

Cheers,

Karl

Hello Roger -

I would say the same Karl has - the KLM slightly milky/flat, the Air Berlin red colours are really missing contrast.

Hi Roger,

The KLM looks good, although I would personally just add a touch more contrast. The Berlin I'd say still needs quite a bit more, and the pink cast looks quite pronounced now.

Cheers,

Karl

Where do you see pink exactly? The red colors on the livery to me are clearly red and not pink. Please let me know.

You might want to adjust your monitor if that is the case, the color is quite washed out.

Hi Roger,

While I agree that the colour is indeed red, it does have a pink hue to it. I shoot a lot of Air Berlins and have become used to what type of red they use to paint their aircraft. This is how I'd expect it to look...

It can also be that the red is just fading on the aircraft itself because the red on all my photos really is the color on the aircraft. It's not as red as the ones posted in reply 7. Or can the position of the sun also have an effect on how the red color is seen?

Absolutely. I love shooting Air Berlin in the evening, because the sunset colors really bring out the red colors.

I would use a 3:2 crop on these photos. This one looks slightly high in the frame, and I don't see the need for all the grass included at the bottom.

In all the photos that have been rejected for contrast, it looks to me like I would bring the black slider up a bit, but also darken the midtones a bit. I've found that's a good way to get rid of the washed-out look, and it should help the red look more red.
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Hi Roger,

The sun's position can of course alter colour but I doubt to the extent of that in your Air Berlin shot. The faded theory is plausible but I shot the exact same aircraft in September this year and the red was typical Air Berlin red - i.e. not faded.

I'd try increasing the contrast once again (it still could go a lot higher without being over-done) and just bringing down the brightness slightly, as the whites in places look a little bright.

Looks better color/contrast-wise. Still would crop it at 3:2 and lower it slightly in the frame.
