Return Flight: Hangzhou to San Francisco on United's 787

Sat Dec 16, 2017 11:29 pm

Hello everyone. I posted the TR for my SFO-HGH flight a few days ago; now I present the same for the return flight!

Some info:
Flight: UA983
Route: Hangzhou (HGH) to San Francisco (SFO)
Date: January 6, 2017
Aircraft: Boeing 787-9
Registration: N38955
Class: Economy Plus
Seat: 23A

Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport, International Terminal
Image

HGH's international terminal isn't very big, especially compared to its much larger domestic terminal.

On display is a historic Hongqi CA7560 sedan. This particular vehicle transported US president Richard Nixon when he was in Hangzhou during his historic 1972 visit.

N38955 was delivered to United in April 2015; it was assembled in Charleston, South Carolina.

Boarding at gate A06

A second security check is conducted in the gate area, just like for all US bound flights from Asia.

I like the HGH airport - small and clean. The only problem is getting to town. Long lines to taxis and no trains. Maybe eventually they will get one of the subway lines directly to the airport. I flew several times in and out of HGH on my first China trip. United meals look like they have gone through recycling. My God can they come up with something remotely interesting. Who wants to eat pasta and follow that by potato salad?

I believe they are building a much needed subway line to the airport right now, won't open for another few years though unfortunately. I agree that flying out of a smaller airport like HGH has many advantages, none of the long lines they have up in PEK.

Great report and pics!

That dinner made me laugh, though. Pasta, potato salad and bread. An all-carb meal ?! Who comes up with these menus? .. I guess that's one way to make everyone fall asleep soon after! Lol

Nice trip report and pics. The breakfast actually looks pretty decent for an economy meal.

The dinner meal looks quite sad and quite typical of UA long haul flights. I fly frequently from SFO to SYD on economy and their meals are substandard.

LOL the dinner looks pathetic though it has actually been upgraded from lettuce to potato salad. Was it at least ice cream for desert?

Yea, there was ice cream, which I didn't get a photo of for some reason.
