Skiing Pilatus Style in the PC-6

While in New Zealand, dad wanted to see Mount Cook, so after a long but pleasant drive to Mount Cook, we found a small airport where Mount Cook Skiplanes & Helicopters operate sightseeing and flights to take skiers in to the mountains.

Went and booked on a 30 minute sightseeing flight in a Cessna 185, but were hoping for the Pilatus Porter.

There were two skiers booked in the Porter to take them out to some remote slope on the Tasman Glacier, and there were two seats spare on the Porter, so dad and I were put on that flight. In the end there were six of us onboard. Pilot, another pilot being trained on the Porter, the two skiers with their equipment and dad and I.

Quite a big single engined aircraft I thought.

Dad and I were sat in the middle row of seats with the skiers and their skis in the last row.

Not the quietest of aircraft, but quite short take off.

We climbed fairly quickly to 8,000 feet passing Mount Cook, Mount Tasman and several other peaks before landing on the snow. A first for us. A bumpy landing as appears they have done many flights there during the ski season, so the snow had been cut up by the skis.

Landing on the snow.

ImageMountCookSkiplanesPC-6-ZK-MCN-50 by Ryan Hothersall, on Flickr

We landed on the Tasman Glacier.

Sky was cloudless and very little wind up there. It was cold, but not as cold as I imagined it would be.

We are not used to this altitude, so we were a bit breathless.

I was expecting to get my feet wet in the snow, but at that altitude, the snow was powder like and not wet and slushy which was what I was expecting.

After a few photos with our pilot Pete Williams, and the trainee pilot, it was time to head back to Mount Cook Airport.

We did several touch and gos on suitable areas of snow on the way back and flew past Mount Cook, although we were at 8,000 feet it still towered above us.

Made a steep approach to the runway, the propeller is set in the beta range which generates no forward or reverse thrust, but creates drag which allows for a steep approach angle. Quite smooth touch down but in a normal runway.

A memorable experience that, first landing on snow, and naturally created snow.
