Air Nelson CHC-HKK 13-09-00

Thu Sep 14, 2000 7:46 am

Just to give something a little exotic.

After transiting through the Christchurch Koru Club from Wellington and having my obligatory morning toasted crumpets and an orange juice while watching the morning rush of AirNZ 737's, Mount Cook ATR's, QANTAS NZ BAe 146's and Dash 8's, we were called on time to the Air Nelson (Air NZ Link) Metroliner III ZK-NSY.

Handed my laptop to the first officer for stowage in the nose hold and did the usual Metroliner induced damage to my back in getting to my seat. 8 POB.

On time take off on the cross runway allowing for a straight on track departure. A stunning morning with fresh spring snow from the day before on the Alps. Up top 10,000 ft and across Mount Rolleston (7500 ft) with clear views right down the spine of the Alps beyond Mt. Cook to Mt. Aspiring. I've done this trip well over a hundred times and I NEVER read my newspaper (when the weather is bad this is because I am hanging on to the seat in front).

Cloud beginning to come on to the West Coast. Once across Rolleston into a very steep descent (more steep than usual to get under the cloud and stay visual). Lake Brunner glowering grey green under the cloud in stark contrast to the glistening high tops.

Down to 1500 ft and a slow turn on to finals over Lake Mahinapouri. Then briefly out over the sea and across the Hokitika downtown low enough to recognise someone I know and plop on to the wet runway. Everything soggy, but not currently raining. In the air for 21 minutes.

Hokitika gets three Metros a day and very little else. There is a C172 on the Apron. Into the tiny terminal to a friendly welcome (when the terminal was opened in 1979 I was on the first Friendship flight in and this makes me a local celebrity). Pick up the rental car and off to work.

Hi Rongotai!

Thanks for that great "exotic" trip report and welcome to the forums!

Could we hear more from you and NZ aviation?

Greetings to Aotearoa,
the WorldTraveller
