Here is a look at my recent experience with Delta Airlines. I purchased my tickets based on the aircraft types I haven't flown yet. My coworkers are still wondering why I didn't fly non-rev... but the overall flight experience was great.
My first segment was DTW-ATL on DL's MD88. It was in it's old colors and at 5:30 a.m. we were set to take off. We were DTW's first commercial passenger aircraft to take off. We took off from runway 21C and headed straight for ATL. I was very impressed with the MD88, having never flown on it. I sat across the rear galley exit, in an aisle seat. Being 6'1, I was comfortable and the flight crew were very nice. We arrived into ATL and I got to see all the colors of Delta, if you know what I mean. I was lucky to have my connecting flight in the same terminal, I walked to gate B-1 for my flight to RSW.
Segment 2: DTW-RSW on DL's B767-300. Before boarding began, crowding began and I became upset that people can't sit down or move away from the gate-boarding area. As an airline employee, many "passenger" habits upset me. I waited for my roll call, 34-G. I got to my seat and sat down with a pillow. I noticed that the spoilers were in the up position and a DL mech below. As the aircraft was ready for departure, the pilot came on and said that the mechs are fixing a hydraulic leak they found in preflight. No big deal in opinion, our L1011's never make it on time, so delay's are a way of life now. "Get over it" I say. We were allowed to deplane and were called back for departure. Delayed only 2 hrs now, we headed down the taxi-way. This 767-300 was a bit cramped compared to the MD88. I was lucky the seat in front of my didn't recline. I saw many 777s and 767-400s in new-new colors. They look great. My favorite is the MD88 in new colors, which I saw also. DL flight 194 was also a good flight, despite the delay. We then landed into the warm sunny weather at RSW.
Return Flight: DL B767-200 to ATL. Sat in row 14-A, the row without the window. The seating was more spacious, very noticeable compared to the 763. Departure was quick as there were no others taking off at the time. Flight itself was probably the best of the whole trip. Flight crew were great and the flight was very smooth. The only complaint I may have is the two guys behind me. Landed into ATL and finally got to use some reverse thrust, the sounds I've been waiting for! Arrived in B terminal again, but had to transit to A for a late flight back to DTW. Also saw a newly painted 727 in the new colors. It looked great!
Final Segment: DL 2106 to DTW. Once again, back on the MD88. Boarded at 11:40 p.m. and out the gate and taxing at 11:55 p.m. We taxied by the hangars "Fly Delta Jets" and got to see the row of several B767-400s again and many other jets, like the MD11, 777, 737s. We turned onto the runway and off we went to DTW. As we lifted off the runway, got to see the opposite side and a row of L1011s being parked for the night. The flight back was only about 55% full. Empty seat next to me, got to relax. I sat in row 21-E, in front of the wing. As we arrived into the DTW area, passing through the clouds gave us a shake and the lighting on the wing exposed the snow in the air as we passed through it. After aligning for runway 21L, we touched down, and following us was a NW DC10. As was taxied to the gate, engines shut down and that ended my vacation. The flight crew were very nice and professional.
