CanJet Trip Report

Fri Nov 24, 2000 10:30 am

I'm back after 3 days. Here is what I have to say about CanJet.

Tuesday Nov 21

I was the first person to check in for the flight to Toronto. After sitting in the observation lounge for 1.5 hours, I proceeded past security. While waiting in the boarding area, 23 people de-planed from the CJ flight arriving from YYZ. There was 28 people in the lounge for my flight. We boarded the aircraft, a 737-200. I was the last person on board of 28 and I took my place in seat 2A. Un-eventful flight with a flying time of 2hr 4 min 47 sec. Drinks and snacks had been served 20 min into the flight. We arrived on Runway 33L in Toronto and proceeded to our gate.

Thursday Nov 23

Again I was the first person to check in. After killing 1.5 hours in T3, I made my way to the boarding lounge. The plane arrived 20 min before departure. We all boarded and I took my place in seat 6A. There was 25 people on this flight. We took off from runway 27. We had a flying time of 2hr 26min 25sec. It was uneventful. Snacks and drinks were served again.

My over all opinion of CanJet is excellent. The aircrafts were extremely clean, inside and out. All of the staff was friendly and willing to help. Seat pitch was very generous for a discount airline, I'm 6'1" and slouch and my knees did not touch the seat ahead of me.

I encourage everybody to fly them to keep them in the air as long as possible. I hope loads increase soon. They are an excellent airline.

28 ppl??? 25 ppl???

They're dead. What was the revenue on a flight like that? $2300 US? Maybe 2500 US. Enough to cover some of the fuel.

I know. It's pretty low. I hope it picks up soon. The nice thing is you get your luggage quick though. Interior was a dark blue carpet, white walls, and a bluish green seat. Seats needed to be broken in a bit though. It felt like a rocket on take-off because of the low load.

No, those loads aren't great. But they're starting in the winter (bad decision economically, but I guess it's for competitive reasons...). And their system load factor is around 60%, which while still losing money is nonetheless reasonably respectable for a new airline. I'll be waiting to see what happens next summer, as with their backing I think they'll get through the winter. There's also the issue of exposure... Just my perspective, but reading the newpaper yesterday there was a half-page ad for WestJet, and three pages later there was a 2"x3" CanJet ad. I was quite glad to see CanJet advertising in the market (there had been very little of it), it just seems to me it's typically a problem that CanJet is relatively unknown in many of it's markets (that is, the markets ouside of the maritimes) while WJ has a much higher profile.

Thanks for the trip report, and BTW AC_A340, did you perchance see anything else of CanJet's loads from other flights when you were at YYZ??? I wish them luck, but I heard their loads are way less than Royal's.

There was a flight that arrived in YYZ. I'm not sure where it was from but it had about 30 on it I would guess. Good thing they cancelled their Windsor service. That is most definately a disappointing load. About 10 would be my guess. I'm wondering if maybe the Christmas season will pick things up for them. I hope so.

I'm flying out to YVR from YYC with WestJet tommorow morning. I'm glad to see some competition brewing up in Canada. I wish CanJet the best of luck, however WestJet is growing fast, I'm sure you've heard about their large order from Boeing, looks like WestJet plans to go completely national. And who knows maybe within the next decade or so we might see a posting about WestJet ordering some 767's and A-340's etc. To go international.

Just a thought.

Those are pretty low loads, but most start-up airlines start out pretty slow, with light loads and losing money. It doesn't mean their dead by any means. Now if 6 months from now they're still flying their planes consistently empty, they got problems.

Over 3 years later and....

I just booked my mother-in-law to fly Canjet LGA-YYZ return. I needed a cheap deal and 188 CAD return seemed OK to me, travelling at peak time.

But then I saw the "Taxes and Additional Charges" pages and coughed up another 127 CAD!

Anyway, I went looking for trip reports but could only find this thread.

They look allright don't they? I notice they're still flying 737-200s, mother-in-law will be pleased, I'll tell her to pack the earplugs!

Thanks for article AC_A340 - anyone got more recent info?

Amazing, I was reading through this report, and seeing a reference to how the loads were worse than Royal's, and was going to correct the user and saying perhaps he meant Jetsgo! Anyways, it would be cool to see any feedback on Canjet 2. The people I know who've flown on Canjet were satisfied. It is a simple airline, with basic service, but very friendly staff. I only flew them once, back in 2001 coming back to YYZ from YHZ, and this was after the C3 merger.

If I survive two weeks Canadian holiday (errrm?) with wife, mother-in-law and baby, all sleeping in the same room. (yes, madness) I'll let you know what she thought of Canjet!!

If you see an overweight Englishman swearing a lot in Toronto in July, say hello to me.

It's funny reading about how CanJet1 was since I'm with CanJet2. Standby, I'll make sure to look out for an overweight swearing englishman and say hey!  Smile Hope your mother in law enjoys our flight from LGA to Toronto and it's not that loud of a trip! You could have gotten the 735 lol...
