Report: UA1296/1117 LAX-MSY

Wed Nov 29, 2000 1:58 am

Spent the Thanksgiving Holiday in New Orleans, and that means flying UA1296 to MSY and 1117 back to LAX. Now normally it's just my wife and I, and we fly this route so often we don't normally pay attention to service. However, this trip we brought along 2 friends and their teen daughter. This was their first time flying so it was up to my wife and I to play "tour guide" and explain everything that was going on.

UA1296

Flight was full. We left an hour late mostly because we could not back out into the alley until other aircraft cleared. While this is typical of LAX and is a combination of ATC and UA, there should be better coordination as to who moves when. Takeoff and climb out where fine. Once we got closer to Texas, the ride got rough from the storms in the area. Seatbelt sign was on the rest of the trip. Rough descent into MSY as we landed in a driving rain storm with winds around 20mph. Landing was hard with a braking problem that caused the plane to lurch right. That caught everyone by surprise and I had visions of getting stuck in the mud. We did make up about a 1/2 hour in flight. The cabin crew was rather indifferent. They where not friendly but did their job efficiently and thats all. I think a few may have been recent hires. Ironically our friends thought the lasagna served for dinner was great. They couldn't understand why people always complain about airline food.

UA1117

Another full flight. We where a little late leaving as there where some late baggage to get onboard. The Bayou Classic was that afternoon and there where some fans who just made the flight. The trip was fairly smooth and only hit a few pockets of turbulence. Nothing major. The inflight crew, at least in coach where not very good. Let me clarify that, 3 of the 4 where not very good. One male attendent had a smile on his face the entire trip and even talked to the passangers as we waited for the lavatory. The other three looked and acted like they wanted to be anywhere but on that plane. The one male attendent of the three was downright rude to passengers. No class whatsoever. Now since I fly alot I understand that their are good and bad days for flight attendents. Usually it doesn't bother me, but this guy was really bad. I plan on writing UA about him because he needs a major attitude adjustment. Our friends liked the chicken and rice we had for dinner, it was actually pretty good. Just bring back a tomato or slice of cucumber for the salad please!! Only other problem is that it took an hour for our luggage to get to the claim belt.

Other than the problem noted above they where typical UA flights. We'll see if things improve next trip.
