JAX-FLL-JAX On Southwest

Tue Dec 05, 2000 12:01 am

Well I arrived at the airport about 1 1/2 hours before departure and checked my bags at the counter. I walked straight to the gate and down the C concourse (or whatever it is) not much to see considering it was about 8pm and waited around to get my boarding card.

JAX-FLL, Dec. 1
SW #421, N684WN 735 or 733
Departure: 8:45pm, actual 8:52pm
Arrival: 9:50pm, actual 9:48pm

Well the flight came in from BNA at about 8:30pm and some of the pax deplaned but about 20 or so stayed on and about 20 boarded from JAX so it was a quite empty flight. The boarding process was crazy but efficient and the plane was loaded after about 10 mins. I had a window seat on the left side of the plane (I sat there so I could have a view of the coast, but we ended up flying off the coast so all I had for a view was pitch black). Well we taxied around the aiport quite fast and tookoff faster than any 737 I have ever been on. (I dont know why they were taxiing so fast and taking off so fast but it was like that in FLL also). Flight was very uneventful and only about 56 mins long, we were served drinks and peanuts and that was about all for the flight. We landed early and taxied past the terminals, I didnt see much but a few AA md-80's and lots of SW planes. The terminals in FLL are all tore up and there are wires hanging from where the ceiling is supposed to be and the terminal (I think it was the F gates) looked like it was in bad need of a renovation.

FLL-JAX, Dec. 4
SW #516, N897SW 735 or 733
Departure: 7:15am, actual 7:22am
Arrival: 8:20am, actual 8:24am

After a few fun days in FLL it was time to go home, my friend who was driving me to the airport had never been there before and we got lost for about 20 mins trying to navigate the screwy roads that supposedly lead to the parking. I decided to carry my bags on because the lines at the ticket counter were long, I checked in at the gate which was hassle free and got boarding card #17 and waited around. I saw a AA 727-200, TW md-80, CO 738, 752 and md-80 and lots of SW 737's, the highlight of my time at the airport was when I saw the AA retrojet, it was a 757 and it looked quite nice. Well it was time to leave and boarding was a mess, tons of people lined up and I was at the back of the line even though I was in the first boarding group, well they said "anyone with boarding card 1-30 come to the jetway" so I had to fight my way through the crowd trying to get to the jetway and I finally got on the plane. Taxi and takeoff were fast again and we flew our way up the coast. They passed out Orange juice and coffee and came around offering more about 4 times. We descended into JAX and it was bumpy the whole way down. We finally touched down and deplaned.

My thoughts: I would definitly fly Southwest again because of the excellent value, my first impression of them was great, but I hate their boarding process. All the employees I saw seemed happy to be at their job and were dressed very casually.

Overall rating: A-

The pilots at SWA taxi fast everywhere they go. They get bonuses for on-time performance and for arriving early.

The SWA terminal (I think it's T2) is torn up because it is being remodeled. I was there a month or so ago and you're right, it looks like crap.

Southwest is at Terminal 3 at FLL along with TW, AA, and NW. CO and US are in T3 also but on the other concourse. SW uses only 2 gates at FLL in a very small area right after security but is able to sustain a ton of flights. It's impresive actually. All of FLL is under consideration, a new Terminal 1 is nearing completion, the renovation of Terminal 4 recently was completed and Terminals 2 and 3 are still in the midst of new wiring, ceilings, signage, and design. A new long-term parking garage was built a year ago. Should be exciting...

BTW: How much was the ticket?

I paid exactly $99. I think SW has 2 gates in terminal 3 and when I arrived at FLL there were some SW planes parked at terminal 2. The roadways going to the airport were a mess and very confusing trying to find the parking lots, but tons and tons of parking spaces available in the parking garage. Also isnt TWA supposedly "focusing" on FLL, it didnt seem like it, they had 1 gate that I saw and a tiny check in counter. I forgot to mention, the planes I flew were extremely comfortable, they had plenty of legroom and the seats could easily rival those of the majors.

I will be flying to JAX this summer. I have taken off out of the C terminal on CO and arrived at the A terminal on DL. How is the B terminal? I see JAXPORT has a redesigned website, looks nice.

The B concourse looks the same as A and C, last year they added a few gates at the end that are for regional planes like Midway, US Express and a few others. The planes just park outside and you walk outside to get on. The airport was quite dirty when I was there (which is unusual for JAX) and they are building many many more parking spaces that are much needed.

I lived in JAX for a couple of years. Anything new going on? The last time I flew in there was October 99.

CactusA319- I live in JAX now, and I can tell you you certainly haven't missed much. The B Concourse has two new gates at the end for RJs, there's some new parking, and international flight ideas have been tossed around. I believe BA was actually in serious talks for a biweekly B767-300ER flight from LGW (might've been LHR, but I doubt it- all the papers said was London) to JAX and back. Apparently the head of JAXPORT made some unreasonable demands, and BA said, "Forget it." Oh, WN's expanding like wildfire here.

Really, nothing's happened.

That sucks. The most interesting thing I heard about after I left was Air Transat operating L1011 flights there a couple of years ago. They parked it out at C8 if I'm not mistaken. It was running tourists up to Fernadina and other spots around JAX. It only lasted a few months though.

N684WN is a 737-300 and N897SW is not a Southwest plane, was it N697SW??? If so, it is a 737-300 too. All of Southwest's N-Numbers are organized as follows.

N with a 2 digit number is a -200
N 300 or 600 number is a -300
N 500 number is a -500
N 700 number is a -700.

There are no 800 numbers at least not yet, when Southwest gets more -700's they probably will start with the 800 numbers, but not starting with 897.

It's interesting to note, there is an exception to that.

N702ML, ship 702, is a 737-200 inherited from the old Midway Airlines. Definitely an oddball.
