I just got back from a United BOS-IAD-BOS roundtrip, and wanted to provide both my two cents on the new Economy Plus section and see what others thought (particularly comparing it to AA's more room in coach). On the BOS-IAD flight, I got 9F on the 735, which is an exit row. It had the most legroom I have ever seen in any aircraft exit row besides the 747: there must have been around 50-60". I felt sorry for the guys paying for first class, since I had more room (AND no one in the middle seat) and pretty much the same service considering it was such a short flight.
Coming back I flew standby since I was scheduled for a later flight, and was told that "we've got one seat left" and just rebooked outright. It turns out the plane was so empty that they had to block off the first two rows to keep the plane balanced, so I don't know what the "one seat left" deal was all about. Anyway, I got 6F on a 733, which was less impressive than the exit row on the 735, but still very roomy and comfortable. I'm pretty sure it was more than 34" pitch, probably more like 36". I wouldn't mind flying transcon in one of these seats at all. Last time I flew United it was SJC-IAD on the A319 prior to the introduction of Economy Plus, and thought it was pretty uncomfortable.
Both the flights arrived on time, and Channel 9 is always a nice touch. I was very pleasantly surprised by United considering their current difficulties. I think that if they get their labor issues resolved and as long as you get to fly Economy Plus, United is definitely a good choice. Otherwise, I think I'll fly American. How do you feel comparing AA and UA seats?
