My first trip report, had to be a good trip as last for a while. Did this trip in June 2000 but with northern summer coming up thought you may like to know how good ANC is.
Travelled JL SYD/KIX/LAX and JFK/NRT/SYD. AS LAX/SEA/ANC/LAX
AA LAX/ORD/DAY TOL/ORD/MIA/JFK. Also did a CV580 flight ANC/VDZ/ANC and a scenic flight on ERA DC3 as well as the 580.
Flights all ran very smooth with the only delay out of ORD but that worked to our benefit as we managed to knock off a couple of extra rolls of film.
If you ever get the opportunity do ANC the scenery for shots is fantastic and most points are easily accessible with a car. Freighters galore which was the purpose of the whole trip as well as a dozen DC6'S of NAC and ACE, the weather was kind and we were suitably impressed. The only drawback if you can call it that was the 0400 starts and 2400 finishes but thats sufferig for our art.
KIX/LAX/ORD/MIA/JFK/NRT were all of benefit for varying reasons, although very pleased with efforts at MIA and JFK and if you ever go to NRT stay at the hotel Marroad, book through the net to get a 51% discount. Ask for a room which overlooks the runway and watch everything go by.
As I said main purpose of trip was freighters hence DAY for Emery, Wilmington for ABX and TOL for BAX. All very early starts but all very profitable for countless DC8'S and 727's lots of driving involved and you could only do it in summer with early sunrises. Dayton and Wilmington have mini hubs during the day which especially at Wilmington allowed us some great shots of ABX DC8'S and 767'S rotating.We found good spots at all locations and we came away very pleased but tired, if you ever get the chance to do it, it is a great experience with freighter after freighter departing, can only imagine what UPS and FEDEX hubs would be like.
All in all a great trip, 72 rolls of film and would thoroughly recommend ANC to anybody who has the chance, as well as doing the freighter hubs in the midwest.
