I was supposed to fly US Airways DSM-MCI-PHL-LGW but fog in Kansas City that morning caused them to send me NW DSM-DTW-PHL where I could catch the US Airways flight to Gatwick.... Well I discovered that NW canceled the DTW-PHL flight upon arrival in Detriot so I had to go on NW's DTW-LGW flight later that night. As far as finding alternatives for me, the airlines did a good job. After changing the plans again in Detriot, I went to the NW ticket counter (upon a US Airways gate agent's suggestion) to arrange for my checked baggage to go with me to London that night on NW's flight. Didn't happen. A courier delivered it out here to Swansea 2-and-a-half days after my arrival though so I did get it. They're supposed to compensate me. Still waiting for that.....

The flights went well and were more or less on time. The first flight from DSM-DTW was a supprise ride on an old DC-9. It was nice on the inside. An average person wouldn't have known that it was that old of an aircraft. It had drink and snack service on that flight. We had to hold in a pattern before landing. We descended landed parellel to another NW jet, I think an Airbus 320 or similar. If I had had a good camera with me, I could have taken a *great* picture of the wing of my plane and that other one in the not-so-far distance and we were in the sunlight right above some low clouds. Oh well. Landed in gloomy Detroit. Saw the new terminal under costruction.

Found out my conecting flight to PHL was cancelled. I think I said "Fuuuucck" out loud right there in the crowded terminal. Made the arrangements as described above. Waited for the late London flight, a LONG 5 or so hour layover. But at least the airport had a Little Ceasar's pizza place so I could eat one of my favorite foods--Crazy Bread and Crazy Sause--before leaving the country.

I slept a bit while waiting for the London flight. Boarded. Got my seat which gave me a good view. I was right by the side of the port side engine. Took off. They were supposed to show a movie but didn't. Just some variety programming. There was dinner service. Food was ok, not that great. There are no air nozzles on the DC-10 that I was on. And it was hot! Something under the floor was quite warm so my feet were hot and it made that part of the plane hot. Uncomfortable! I fell asleep for a couple hours in the middle of the flight. I woke up and it was daylight all of a sudden. It was cloudy over the ocean but it cleared up right as we got to the island of Great Britain. I think we flew just to the south of the Bristol Channel and then we had to hold a bit to land at LGW and we were over the south coast. I thought I cold see France in the distance but it may have been clouds. Landed on time--would have been early if we didn't have to hold. I cleared immigration before the line grew so I got through quickly. Then I went to the baggage claim and waited in vain for my bags. Went to the baggage service office, then wondered around the airport a bit and then got on my train.

Well, the trip over wasn't too bad except for the heat on the DC-10. My first DC-10 trip, BTW.

Any questions? Comments?
