Is This Cheap To Australia?

Sun Mar 04, 2001 5:34 am

Hi all,

As many of you are aware I will be heading down under this summer. The fare that the company I am traveling with provided from LAX-SYD-CNS-SYD-LAX is $1300.00 US Dollars RT on AirNZ and Ansett Economy. My mom thinks this is overly expensive, I think its pretty cheap. Is this a cheap fare or an expensive fare?

Thanks,
Greg

I think that's pretty good... at least when compared to fares I've come up with when looking online between just LAX-SYD.

I think its cheap too since it cost $1200 to fly PHL-DEN-COS, JAC-DEN-PHL, (UA) which I did on my summer trip of 2000...

Thats way expensive!
For us flying from Sydney to LAX... on air NZ Peak costs us $1600 (thats US $ 900)

And at the moment theres a special to fly there for $999 - about US$ 550
(if course this wouldnt include Cairns, so you'd have to buy this separately...)

Then buy a Syd-Cairns fare - about $400-600 aussie (US$200-300)

but have a shop around and also check out discounter travel agencies... like STA travel - i know there's one in LA that i saw while staying there-
In Santa Monica... on SantaMonica Blvd and 4th.

Hope this helps  Smile
Anything else oyu need- just email me....
Malcolm (in sydney)

p.s. whatever you do dont fly United 744's long haul - rather stick to Air NZ  Smile

That is pretty expensive. One thing that my sister has taught me. (She works for AirNZ) never go through a Travel angency. Always go through the Airline Direct. You get about a 300-400 dollar discount.

I have to say it is very expensive!! But anyway have a great flight!!

Cheers
mikey

PS Stick to AirNZ as Qantas and UA have the baddest seat pitch you could ever have on a 15.30 hour flight

I have to differ with some of the posts above, and state that the $1,300.00 USD fare is not unusual- whether it is outrageous, is another question entirely.

And I certainly wish we could simply purchase our R/T tix to Aussie for whatever price (converted to USD) they're quoting for R/Ts from Australia to the 'States- but that isn't an option!

But in my regular fare-watching, that one is not terrible. A typical "hot" deal would be $999.00 LAX-SYD R/T.
...three miles from BRONS, clear for the ILS one five approach...

Airnewzealand,

In the UK, it's the reverse. We never approach the airline direct, as they will always charge you the full fare, with no discount.

Travel Agency fares are MUCH cheaper than what the airline offers.

The only exception is with no-frills airlines.

I feel sorry for those flying to Oz from LAX.

UK-Oz flights start at GBP450 ($659).

I dont really have any choice in airlines for the LAX-SYD-CNS-SYD-LAX legs, as we are required to travel with our group on the same flight...

Well, if you can United Airlines between LAX and SYD, it will be cheaper.
The fare betwee LAX and SYD by UA is US$912 via SFO. Air Pacific(operated under sharecode with Qantas) is US$827 via Nadi.
The fare between SYD and CNS is US$310 by Qantas.

So, if you choose Air Pacific with Qantas, it would be the cheapest and it will cost you US$1137. If you choose United Airlines, it would be US$1222. The choice is up to you. The fare is based on departing LAX on July 1 and back on July 14.

To me the fare sounds fair, if not great. It's certainly the combination of airlines I'd go with from experience (OK you don't get a choice), you might get lower just to Sydney, but obviously you'd have to then buy a seperate ticket to CNS and buying in the US, you won't get the discount fares available (I've had many arguements with AN and QF about that!!), so by paying a full fare you'd probably end up overall paying more in total. Such is airline logic....

AirNewZealand: Most airlines charge more by going direct, a few including ANZ and SQ offer lower fares direct, but they're the exception rather than the rule, although the trend is towards direct sales.

Correction!

(News beep thingie)

This just in: The new fare from the travel agent is...$980.00...the domestic leg will end being US as UA's flights on the return leg from LAX would force a 6-hour layover there which I would love, but my parents arent as enthusiastic...lol...

Well, good luck with your journey.
I have no idea about prices, but go to http://www.qantas.com/ and write in destination etc. on first page.
Hope this helps.
