Go Vs Easyjet The Verdict!

Sun Mar 11, 2001 1:45 am

Well here is the second part of my report, only a week later, but i`ve been busy. Ok so we arrived at belfast at 7:50 for the 8:40 flight, the airport was really busy, especialy the bmi checkin, they are definatly doing the best business on the london flights. The checkin was much more formal than easyjets, although it felt a little less friendly. We wandered around the airport and then headed to the gate at 8:15, saw the same bmi a321 as before, and a ba saab340, i think it was a logan air franchise flight to edinburgh. Saw the go 733 arrive, it was yellow with go for business titles. I was amazed to see only 20 people get off the flight, especialy considering it was the midle of the week and a prime business flight. I`m also sure that belfast to london is one of europes busiest routes, bmi have 9 flights a day, ba has 7, go have 3, easyjet have 5 and british european have about 15!
We borded the flight at 8:30, only about 80 people where onboard, no wonder go is loosing so much money. The crew wore proper uniforms and looked much more professional than easyjet. The 733 felt really old, and it had the most unfortable seats i have ever had the misfortune to siton. The leg room was much less that easyjet, my knees where hiting the seat in front, but the big problem was the size of the seat, maybe they where designed for dwarfs! the seatback stopped at the base of my neck, there was no head support at all, really really bad. the flight itslef was fine, no free amenities, i bought a kit kat chunky for 50p, a complete rip off but i felt guilty, the fa`s seemed really unhappy. Landed in stansted on time, saw several ryanair 738`s,732`s and several go and buzz aircraft also. low fare airlines definatly rule this airport. I was horrified to find that my massive art portfollio had been put in the normal hold, even though i asked for it to be kept safe, so it was scrated and slightly bent. we then took the train to london liverpool street, not the nicest part of london but bside the university i was going to, it only took 50 minutes.
For the flioght home we arrived at about 6, for the 7:30 flight. Stansted was packed, there seemed to be loads of flights leaving at once. The shopping was really good and there was plenty of restaraunts in the main terminal. hovever i made the mistake of going to the gate 45mins before the flight, there was a flight to londonderry and belfast in the same gate, it was hell on earth, full of people who looked like they had never been in a car letalone an aircraft! so we found a seat facing the toilets! it was the best available, then came the inevitable delay, only 30mins, could have been worse, and at least they told us. so the a/a finally arrived at 8;00, and they called us straight away, big mistake number 2. they use bording cards, but dont call by seat number, and go also are too cheap to pay for jet ways to the a/c, so we all had to march outside in the snow, rain and sub-zero temps to stand and que on the a\c srairs while people tried to find they`re seats. The plane wasnt much better, it was full, but unfortunatly some form of pipe band where travelling, filling the last 6 rows of the plane. at this point i would have rather stayed outside than be sitting in the aircraft. so understanably the fa`s never smiled once through the whole flight, due to the constant singing and chanting. I actualy hoped that we would crash, removing the last few rows, and the tonedeaf idiots sitting there. This may seem harsh but some people should not be allowed to fly EVER! i spent the whole flight remembering why i HATE my country(northern ireland) with a passion, i think people here are actualy a different species of mankind. thankfuly i will going to university in manchester from september. i`m exagerating, please dont hate me for these generalisations!!!

but ignore my biterness! We arrived back in belfast about an hour late, we saw a bmi a321, airtours a320, ba 735, a319 and and easyjet 733.
Actual my freind was flying home from liverpool on easyjet, his flight was delayed 3 hours, so they demanded to be put on the earlier flight that had been delayed by 4 hours!!!!

The verdict......
Easyjet - friendly but less professional fa`s. Nicer aircraft, and much better seating. A superior boarding system. But huge delays always, they cant keep to the 20 minute turnarounds.
Go - Unhappy miserable fa`s. But has a more professional operation, minus the bording process. Terrible seats, older 733`s and high fares. go is very clearly designed by ba to stop low fare carriers taking its business away, its just typical of ba to be so stupid to set up competiion to its own flights, meaning its loosing money on its own ops and through go!

Take my advice, try to find a cheap fare with bmi, or if your really stuck ba. I will be flying to london this summer, and i will pay with airmiles on ba, or take a cheap bmi ticket.
Otherwise, take easyjet on longer flights, or if you can handle delays, only take go if you are really small or on shorter trips.

hope you all liked the reports,

Nice report - not exactly mirroring my experiences with Go, but maybe I was lucky - or maybe it also depends on the routes. To be honest, on the Munich flights, Go seems the best alternative, as their flight attendants (and pilots) are a good deal nicer than LH or the BD-operated LH flights....

Good report!

The seats and mess/ chaos boarding at STN (you've not lived until you've boarded a Ryanair flight to Ireland at STN) sound familair of GO, as does the not so budget faresa, but the attitude of the staff from my experience is not typical.

Nice report, but you said "no wonder Go are losing so much money". In fact, they are not losing any money, Go entered its first year of profit this year, and business is booming as they say. Even beofre then, it was not losing a massive amount.

I thought Go made operating profits, but overall losses in excess of 21 million pounds? Maybe I just got the numbers wrong...

I can't comment on GO as I've never flown with them, but I found easyJet to be a far more pleasant experience than I had expected. From making the initial reservations to landing back at Luton everything seemed fairly well organised. We were on time in both directions and even had the luxury of being one of the first pax to fly on the 737-700.All in all I had no problem with easyJet at all.....although the boarding process seemed completely bizarre to me,I'm more used to the traditional manner of using proper boarding cards with a seat number printed on it!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
