IAD-DEN-SLC On UAL 777!

Tue Apr 17, 2001 6:18 am

Date:4/9/01
Airline:United Airlines
Flight:UAL311
Depart:Washigton-Dulles(IAD)/17:25
Arrive:Denver International (DEN)/18:35
Flight time:3 hours 10 minutes
Aircraft:777-???

I got to the airport around 4:00 p.m. for the afternoon flight to Denver. I checked in curbside because of my numerous suitcases. After going through security, I got on one of the mobile lounges to the C concourse because I did not want to wait 5 minutes for the shuttle to the D concourse (C and D are connected). The lounge was packed to the brim and I had to lean against the door even though i is prohibited. When the mobile louunge pulled away, I saw some great aircrafts. I saw Swissair and Sabena A330s along with a Lufthansa A340 parked madway between the B and C concourses. Also there was a BA 747-400 with the old color scheme parked at the end of concourse D. I saw the Aeroflot A310! and Virgin 744 at concourse B. My trip was off to a great start! Once I was at the gate, the unted counter called my name for express boarding because I was a little late and had a reserved economy class seat.

On the plane, I saw the huge First Suite and Business class seats! When I got to my seat, I was relieved that the econ. seats had ptvs. I also noticed that the tvs had been fitted with a button for the airshow. This was different from the last time I flew on a UAL 777. It showed the temp., time, map, winds, and elapsed time. This was great.

After take-off, they turned on the movies...
channel 1: Family Man
channel 2: What Women Want
channel 3: unknown movie
channel 4: unknown movie
channel 5: UAL 75 b-day
channel 6: unknown
channel 7: ESPN
channel 8: Disney
channel 9: unknown

The meal was not a choice it was a salad, chicken, rice, green beans, and a shortbread cookie. I find that the chicken, beans, and rice are standard on most UAL longhaul flights!

Family Man was ok. When it was over I read while listening to the cockpit and occasionally looking at the map. I was startled by the -71 degree Fahrenheit temp. and 98mph headwind. I landed around 6:35 p.m. mountain time. I then went to the end of the B concourse to wait for my 7:45 flight on the UAL shuttle.

Date:4/9/01
Airline:United Shuttle
Flight:UAL2821
Depart:Denver International (DEN)/20:25
Arrive:Salt Lake International (SLC)/21:47
Flight time:1 hour 22 minutes
Aircraft:737

Not much to say about this flight other than I was cramped and tired. The service was mediocre. I slept most of the time but there was a good aproach to SLC.

Date:4/15/2001
Airline:United Shuttle
Flight:UA2804
Depart:Salt Lake International (SLC)/7:40
Arrive:Denver International/9:00
Flight time: 1 hour 20 minutes
Aircraft:737
Registration #: UA382

I left the airport sheraton at about 5:45 still half asleep. Not much to do in the SLC airport so I read. It was hard to read because they blast CNN throughout the terminal. When I got on the plane it was still just as cramped with almost no legroom. Service was better because they gave us a mix with pretzels and crackers (they did not serve this or anything on the flight to SLC). We landed in Denver. I was disappointed that there are no foreign airlines in DEN just UAL and DL. DEN should be glad because UAL made it a hub (I dont know why). When I got off the plane I was interrested by how there were two gates for my 777 back to IAD (B32 for econ. and B30 for 1st and business). It seemed kinda weird.

Date:4/15/2001
Airline:United Airlines
Flight:UA296
Depart:Denver International (DEN)/10:25
Arrive:Washington Dulles (IAD)/15:37
Flight time: 3 hours 10 minutes
Aircraft:777
Registration #: UA 768

This flight had ptvs too! They served lunch which was a disgusting chicken sandwich with a gross macaroon and chips (crisps). The movies were...

channel 1: Finding Forrester
channel 2: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
channel 3: Billy Elliott
channel 4: unknown movie
channel 5: UAL 75 b-day
channel 6: unknown
channel 7: ESPN
channel 8: Disney
channel 9: unknown

The tail wind helped because it was 100mph. THe temp. was the same. There was a bumpy approach but I liked it. When I got on the mobile lounge again I saw my first austrian A340 (very cool) I also was amazed to see a Gambia chartered IL-62m and a French air force L-1011 both of these were awesome!

hope you enjoyed the report. HAPPY FLYING!

Wow, that's a nice trip report. I always like to read reports of anyone who has flown on the 777. Did you have anything to add about your 777 experience? Engines quiet? Cabin noisy or cramped or comfortable?

By the way, United has 777-222. I noticed you had question marks in your text. United has only ordered the -200, and as all of them are original to United, they are going to be -222's as 22 is United's code from Boeing. Just to fill you in.

Good report . Its pretty good you got a PTV on a medium-short flight . Sometimes in a 4 hour you dont even have a TV on the plane.

Oops i screwed up on the reg. #'s. The one that says UA 382 is supposed to be N382UA and the one that says UA 768 is supposed to be N768UA

Chepos, I know thats why I made such a big deal about the ptvs. Randy, I was surprised at how quiet the 777 was. I also was most surprised by the headroom made possible by the swing down overhead compartments. i almost felt claustrophibic in the 737 right after exiting the 777! My only complaint was that the reading lights were not directly overhead so it was kind of dark. A plus was that the ptv could be angled up and down which reduced glare. Also, the headrests had been improved by adding folding wings to the sides.

I also forgot to mention that on the SLC-DEN leg, Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens head coach Brian Billick was on it. He sat in first class while I sat in economy.

I did like the seats in the 777, but felt that it would be better if there was an armrest for each person not how it is where there is one in between two seats.

However, I thought that the UA shuttle seats were tiny . I felt that the whole cabin was cramped.
