NW DTW-TPA-DTW

Wed Apr 18, 2001 3:36 am

Well, I was impressed with Northwest in some areas, and really underwhelmed in other areas.

April 11
NW484
DTW-TPA
Dep. 325pm
Arr. 605pm
727-200Adv.

Well, this flight was very pleasing! The 727 looked as fresh as the day it was delivered. Cabin was clean, seats were comfortable. We took off from a rainy and cold Detroit right on time at 3:25. The legroom on this aircraft was impressive. I was in 18F (window) and I could stretch my legs out all the way (under the seat). Didnt get squashed by the recline either. Rather full flight lasted 1hr 32min. We only got a drink service on this flight though, FAs were nice and efficient. NO Entertainment is offered on the 727, and my MP3 player ran out of juice, which made this a really boring flight (I had a seat where you only see the wing). Another odd thing was that on decent, our Captain must of liked rollercoasters because he really pushed foreward on that control column! Dropped like a rock, for a smooth and sunny touchdown at Tampa International, eight minutes early.

While at TPA I saw a variety of planes, including a DL 764 and a BA 772. Got the rental car, over the sunshine skyway, and on to Venice for a week of GOLF!

For the return flight, we got to Tampa about 3 hours early, just to have some "breathing room" as my dad calls it. I got the biggest run around from some of the stupidist NW employees on the face of the earth. My dad and I want to upgrade to first class, so we go to the ticket counter, they tell us to call 1800-44-PERKS. The phone number tells us to go to the gate, the gate tells us to go to the counter, the counter tells us to go to the gate, the gate tells us to call again, and thats when they finally tell us there is NO AVAILIBILITY! So they call the FC passengers to board, and a total of SIX get on. Now folks, NW has more than SIX seats on their 757's, right? Come on, the employees gave me the run around. Row 22 in coach literally sucked. I sat in one of those paper thin cloth covered folding chairs that they call "coach class seats" and was in pain for most of the flight. The aircraft looked old and worn, with ripped seat fabric and garbage everywhere. Very disappointing and dirty. Pushback and takeoff from TPA was very uneventful and on time. Grouchy and irritable FA's served rock hard "Italian subs", which were pressed ham and mozzerela (sp) cheese. ICK! Of course, they had NO entertainment, even though they had cabin monitors on this 2 hour flight. Touchdown and parking at the gate was painless at DTW, nice and fast (at gate:12:29pm). Luggage (and golf clubs) came out fast as well. Off to U.S. Park on Middlebelt where the car was waiting.

Overall, I rate NW a 6/10 because the flight back just plain sucked, and they gave me the run-around about the upgrade.

I think when you upgrade using miles there are only a certain amount of seats available for that. NW 757s still mostly have 14 seats (although they are on the way up to 22). I think that once those couple of seats have been used, even if there are plenty open seats up there, they can't do a worlperks miles upgrade because the computer won't let them. The run around is not excusable. When I have asked I have been told to either call worldperks or check at the gate, but never back and forth like that. That seems silly.

Also, keep in mind that just because only 6 people boarded with first class doesn't mean only 6 people sat there. Some people flying first class stay off the plane until the very last minute from what i have seen when I fly around.

I find the 727 comfortable and haven't had any bad experiences with the 757 so that sort of surprises me.

GREAT REPORT though and I hope you fly with NW again. Don't expect the food to be getting too much better with the economy going the way it is I am sure the food in main cabin will be one of the first things to go down hill again.

I think a 6 is a pretty fair rating, I would have been mad with the run around too. That aside I think you would have ranked them higher though right?

Nwa,

I live in DETROIT, no doubt I will be flying NW again. ;D

Yes, I was pretty angry about the run-around. 1-800-44PERKS told my dad that someone at the airport was blocking those seats, and if they are available, they should have been freed up 20 mins before. I dont know, it just seems that like at NW, everybody has their OWN set of "rules" to follow. Yes, the 757 was "charter airline" style, and was cramped to hell. Ive flown the 757 with NW and DL in the past and never had any problems.

Excluding the run-around, I would rate NW an 8/10, still taking into acount the crummy seats.

Yeah I was thinking it sounded like about an 8/10.

I bet you must be excited for the new terminal in DTW opening. I wonder if there will be an observation deck?

You know, I was thinking the same thing! I could have checked it out, as we walked right past the Wayne County/Metro Airport Info desk where they have a big model of the terminal, and someone there to answer questions. I hope it does!

Nice trip report. I agree with you about their 757s. When I flew on them between Memphis and Seattle, it was cramped, the seats were horrible, and the interior is in bad shape. But I've had no problems with their other planes, including their older DC-10s and DC-9s. I've been flown with NWA a lot and they're an okay airline.

I have been on a few 757s and they have all been really nice. I guess I haven't been on the older ones. I have only been on the ones that have the window exits over the wing as opposed to the older models that have 4 doors. I think some of the 4 door models are pushing 15 years old, so maybe it is time for a refurb on them. Maybe they will get a facelift when the new First Class seats are put in.

If you think the interiors look bad you should write to NW and tell them.

I think I was on one of those older ones. I remember stepping onto one of these 757s I described earlier, and I saw the old Northwest logo, the one next to the "T" in "Orient" on this 757, on the bulkhead.

This was a few years ago. And I'm not sure, but I think this plane had overwing emergency exits.
