SNA-SJC On AA

Wed Apr 18, 2001 10:44 am

Hi. I just joined Airliners.net. this is my very first post.
I just got back from a trip to San Jose for Easter from SNA on AA on 4/11
The departing flight from SNA was AA2872. on a Boeing 737-800 (sorry I couldn't see the tail number) which I'd been wanting to go on for quite some time now. It was my first time on a 737NG. We were scheduled to depart at 8:05 PM, however the plane was late getting in from SJC so the time was pushed back to 8:30. Im glad it was because as I was waiting, I was fourtunate enough to see the Astrojet! which had just come in from Chicago. At about 8:30 we began to board. I was in seat 21C. There was music playing over the PA quite loudly I thought. The NG interior was quite nice, I thought. I took my seat and we soon began to taxi. After the saftey demo, the captain came on and very carefully explained the takeoff procedure at SNA, which I thought was very nice of him since it can scare people. We got to the runway and ROARED down it. This was by far the loudest takeoff I have ever experienced at ANY airport. However once we got in the air (after climbing steeply) the 738 proved to be a quiet airplane. We cruised at 39,000 ft. which seemed very high for this route. Drinks and beverages were served. (we got the whole can.) Very soon we began our decent. We made a right turn over the coast and soon were flying over San Jose. We made a smooth landing ant taxied to gate A8. Overall this was a very good flight. The f/a's and the Captain were very friendly and polite and the plane was very new and clean.

The return flight was on 4/17 on AA2833. An MD-82.(N822RA--Ex Reno Air) We got to the airport about 45 minutes before the flight and checked in using e-tickets. We boarded on time and I made my way to seat 13D Immeadiatly I noticed how much wider the seats were compared to the 738. A little more comfortable too. (They were the old style seats) We began to push back-then stopped abruptly for about a minute to let a 757 pass- then contnued to taxi. The captain didnt say much unlike the one on the way up. We got to the end of the runway and began our takeoff roll. Its amazing how quiet the MD-80 is if your in the front. I could barely hear the engines at all. In the back though, its a different story. We took off, made a right turn and flew south out over the ocean then made a left turn over Orange County. We passee the airport, then made a half circle and made a smooth touchdown. Overall, it was a great trip on a great (and in my opinion the best) airline
As far as the Aircraft go, the 738 was nicer inside, but the MD-80 was a little more comfortable and quieter. Its hard for me to say which one I liked better.

I noticed that steep climb on the 738 that I flew too. It seems to climb very steeply for a little while and then levels off a bit. My takeoff in the -800 was definitly the steepest climb I have ever experienced. Is this a common characteristic of the 737NGs or 2nd generation 737s? The steep climb that is.

Did you take off from SNA in the 738? If you did, the steep climb is because of strict noise rules in place in Orange County. The planes have to get very high very fast. If you didnt take off from SNA, Im not sure why the takeoff was so steep. It could have had to do with ATC or somethig else but I dont think its a common charictaristic of the 737NG.

I took off from ORD and BUF in the 738. I have never experienced a takeoff as steep as both of them. The first time actually made me nervous for a fraction of a second. I was totally surprised it. When I watched the chartered CAL 738 takeoff from Hainan, that looked fairly steep as well, which got me to wondering if the steep takeoff was a characteristic.
