America West PHX-CMH-BOS-PHX

Tue Apr 24, 2001 3:56 am

PHX-CMH Dep. 3:06p Arr. 9:42p

I got to the airport about 1:45p for flight 783 to CMH. I didn't have to check any baggage so I went straight to the gate. Check in was easy and I my seat assignment was 1A. The flight was full and every seat would be taken. To kill time I decided to hang out by the unused gate A18 and watch some planes. Pre-boarding call came at about 2:35p. I don't usually board early, but since I was in first class I figured I would take advantage of the pre-flight hospitality. This was a newer 320 with the turquiose leather seats with adjustable head flaps. The FA in first was Kim, and she was friendly. Drinks and snacks were served before takeoff. The captain came on after everybody was seated and told us we would be arriving a little early today, flight time was only 3hrs. The doors shut on-time at 3:06p and off we went. After a lengthy taxi we were airborne. Usually I think the 320 takeoff is lacking power, but this one put me in the back of my seat. The engines that America West has on their buses make a loud drone when at full power which is a little annoying, but at cruise they are almost silent. The service was very good. A full meal was served that included a salad, choice of shrimp & pasta, barbacue chicken, or some sort of steak. I decided on the chicken. The meal was surprisingly good for airline food and I finished every last bite. I love the baby salt & pepper shakers they give you. After the meal I settled in to watch Vertical Limit with Chris O'donnel. Flight was fairly bumpy and the seat belt sign was illuminated most of the time. The other passengers in the cabin seemed to be a group of businessmen from the same company as they were talking and having a good time. They remarked how they enjoyed the flight and the service. Soon we were on final into CMH. Landing was good and thrust reversers were deployed. Our gate was at the end of the runway so we were there immediently. We were twenty minutes early. Unfortunatly we had to wait about 2 minutes for a jetway driver to show up. That was the worst part of the whole flight, everything else was excellent.

CMH-BOS Dep. 7:05a Arr. 8:51a

After a lovely night in the Cmh holiday inn it was back to the airport to go to BOS. If you haven't been there BOS is a great city to visit. I got to the airport at 6:20a and checked in at the gate. I recieved seat 1D. The flight was booked light judging by the empty boarding area, maybe 50 people. You would think CMH-BOS would be a more popular route. I boarded at 6:40a and got a O.J. to tide me over. Flying time this morning would be about 1hr 35min. The flight attendents were much younger on this flight and seemed to be having a fun time even though it was early. One of the FA's was telling about how that was their only flight and then they had a 23hr layover, she was very excited. The door closed early and soon we were airborne. Flight was uneventful. We were served a choice of pastries in 1st class but I don't think thay had any food in coach. We landed over the harbor instead of over the ocean and touched down about 10min early.

BOS-PHX Dep. 9:30a Arr. 12:23p

I got to BOS early at 7:30a to check in. Went to the ticket counter and recieved seat 8F. The agent told me that it didn't recline since it was in front of the exit row, but the only other choice was a middle seat somewhere so I took it. I don't really recline my seat anyway. The flight was packed so I asked to check my carry-on luggage. The agent was very happy to get a volunteer for this. She usually it's hard to get people to check their bag. Boarding started a little late at 9:10a and was slow. It seemed like everybody had those huge rollerboards to put up, and when the bins filled they held everybody up looking for some space. Finally the FA's had to start checking the bags. This is my pet peeve. Check your freaking bag if the flight is full or making a connection. Pushback was 4 min late at 9:34 because 2 people were assigned the same seat, and they were arguing over it. The FA told them there was a open seat a few rows back, but they wanted the seat on their pass. After more discussion one of them took the other open seat. Flying time was 5hr 23min. The meal in coach was choice of chef salad or sausage and cheese calzone w/ side salad. I took the calzone and it was ok, the salad was fresh and crisp. The movie was Finding Forrester. The captain pointed out Niagra Falls as we flew by, but I missed it. I tried to sleep, but couldn't so I watched the sitcom they had playing. It was the Cheers episode where Sam tries to auction his jersey. Kind of funny since I went to the real Cheers while I was in BOS. Our approach into PHX was full of turns, but finally we were in line and on final. We landed on the north runway from the west. We pulled up at the gate 2 min early at 12:21p.

This was another good trip on America West. I would rate the flights 9/10, 9/10, 9/10. All the crews and agents I encountered were nice and all flights arrived early. Hope you enjoyed the report.

That IS interesting, after all the bad rap America West has been given. Of course, you were in first class most of the time, so that does change things.

Dont' you love those Airbus 320's with IAE V2500 engines? That's my favorite engine.

Sounds like AWA is improving their service anyway hopefully AWA will get back up on its feet no time. At least its great to know that the AWA staff is doing their best to get AWA back on track.
