Right, havng got back from my business trip to Singapore I thought I would post the trip report.
I was booked on flight SQ 319 on J class (Raffles). The a/c was a 744 and I was assigned an upper deck seat. The seats were the new 'Ultimo' seats which were very nice indeed, although not quite as much legroom as I had been made to believe. I personally believe that BA's new Club World seats are slightly better. The cabin was tastefully furnished. Marks - 8.5/10
Anyway, we pushed back on time (9.05 PM) and after a glass of Champagne began the long taxi to the runway, and then rotation.
Service was impressive throughout. In addition to the meal service there was a range of snacks available as well as ice creams, drinks etc. The F/A's were very courteous and helpful - in this respect I believe SQ have gone back to doing what they do best - making pax feel at ease and relaxed on their flights. Also, SQ must tie with THAI for having the best looking F/A's - they were all stunning and immaculately presented. Service marks - 9/10.
Dinner was absolutely fantastic. There was a range of 'World Gourmet Cuisine' available, and I opted for Oriental 5-Spice duck with Plum Sauce. This was simply superb - right up there with what you would expect from a decent restaurant. They also had their famous Kris Chilli Sauce which added a bit of Zing to the food (although the FA's were a little surprised when I had it with my breakfast omelette!). In terms of in-flight food, SQ have a market-leading product both in terms of choice available and quality. A definite 10/10.
In-flight entertainment was good, as always on SQ, although other airlines have definitely caught up. There was a wide range of movies available (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, 102 Dalmations etc). The ice creams were much appreciated during the movies! The PTV screens were huge, and they had dolby surround headphones which gave it an authentic cinematic flavour - I did notice the difference compared with standard headphones. Score - 9/10
I suppose what made the flight so good was the little things that you don't necessarily notice, like the F/A's carefully adjusting your pillow to make you more comfortable, or the discreet and efficient service - informal and friendly, and yet extremely professional. Plus Changi is still a fantastic airport after all these years, although the Computer Terminals were down in the Raffles lounge meaning I had to go to the main terminal.
All in all the SQ experience was very, very good, up there with BA and Emirates (in my opinion) as being the best J class product around. SQ have perfected the art of quality service - there was none of the robotic 'going through the motions' that I have heard some people criticise them for. Food was fab, IFE was very good also - I would highly recommend SQ for anyone thinging of taking them longhaul.
