Trip Report: CLT-SFO-CLT

Tue Jun 05, 2001 2:55 pm

I recently took a trip out to San Francisco on U.S. Airways.
Here's my report

May 31,2001
U.S. Airways flight 129
Charlotte, North Carolina(CLT) to San Francisco,California(SFO)
Scheduled time for departure: 9:50 A.M.
Actual departure time: 10:07 A.M.
Scheduled time of arrival: 12:36 P.M.
Actual Arrival time: 12:40 P.M.
Aircraft: Airbus A321

My Dad and I arrived at the airport in Charlotte at around 8:40 A.M., parked our car in the daily parking, and took the shuttle over to the terminal. We checked in, and went down to Gate B3. I was very excited since I was going to be flying on a brand new A321! So, we waited, and they finally began boarding. So we get on the plane, and I am seated in 16A. Nice view of the wing! The A321 was a beautiful jet, and it seemed like all of the passengers were impressed with it alot. We taxi down the runway, with a little bit of traffic in front of us, but not much. I believe it was a 737 and MD80, both U.S. Airways.
So, at 10:07 A.M. we take off from CLT. It was a very smooth take off. We then made a turn towards the west, and begin heading over to San Francisco.
Not long after takeoff, the flight attendants began doing there job. And I have to say, that the flight crew on this flight was the best I have ever had on U.S. Airways, they were very friendly, and the one I had most of the time was also very funny, she joked around with me when i asked her for some Tea, she said "That'll be 3 bucks", and I looked at her funny, and she said "I'm just kidding".
She later on got a map out and was showing any passengers interested where they were flying over when we started getting closer to S.F. On the flight, they served us a breakfast, I had french toast souflette(or however you spell it), 2 sausages, some fruit, an orange juice, and a small piece of chocolate. Not bad! Not bad at all! The movie they showed on board was Chocolat, didn't watch it though. We finally began out descent into SFO, and we made our final approach from the south. Just flying over San Jose. It's very interesting flying over the Bay. We touched down at SFO around 12:40 A.M., arrived at gate 5, I was able to take a look at the cockpit, the pilot was very friendly, and he showed me some things, and explained how they fly the A321, after that we got our luggage, and left.
Spent the rest of the day, Friday,Saturday, and Sunday morning in San Francisco! Nice city by the way! Golden Gate Bridge is spectacular in person.

June 3, 2001
U.S. Airways flight 58
San Francisco, California(SFO) to Charlotte, North Carolina(CLT)
Scheduled time for departure: 2:00 P.M.
Actual time of departure: 3:45 p.m.
Scheduled time of arrival: 9:45 P.M.
Actual time of arrival: 11:20 P.M.
Aircraft: Airbus A320

I actually got a call on my cell phone from my mom while waiting for the Cable Car, she said that she had just gotten a call from U.S. Airways and they said my flight was delayed till 3:20. Well, my Dad had arranged for an airport shuttle to take us from our hotel in downtown S.F. to the airport at noon.
So we get to the airport at about 12:45 p.m. , we go ahead and check in, and decide since it's right next to us, to walk over to the new international terminal!
It was VERY VERY nice!! I was just amazed by it, SFO did a great job!
Okay, so we leave and go back to gate 3, we wait, and wait, and wait some more. And finally the plane arrives, they unload it, and the flight attendants go on to straighten it up. They call for boarding, and the flight was not that full at all, so they get everyone on in about 8 minutes. Then we are out of there.
We taxi out the runway(sorry, forgot which one), we were 2nd for takeoff, behind an Air China 747-400. We begin rolling down the runway shortly after the Air China jet takes off. And after takeoff we fly over the coast, and it is a breath-taking view, we turn towards the northwest, and fly over the downtown area, and I get a great view of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge! then we are on our way to CLT. I was originally seated in 7A, but since the flight was empty, I moved up to 5F to get better views. Now lets talk about the flight attendants, the one who served me most of the time was terrible, she was very unfriendly, and rude. I asked her if there was a meal on this flight, and she rudly replied" Yes, there is, but I have to serve you this first, it's regulations". And then later on in the flight I got up to go to the bathroom, and she said "Where do you think you are going?", and I said "to the bathroom", and she rolled her eyes. I wanted to tell her off so bad. The movie they were playing didn't seem interesting. I also noticed that the flight attendants did not do a great job in cleaning the plane, as I noticed crumbs in the seat and on the floor.
then Dinner came, again, the same rude flight attendant asked "What do you want, Chicken or Beef?", and I took Chicken. It was Chicken with tomato sauce and mushrooms on top of it, some vegetables on the side, a salad, a piece of cheescake, and a roll with butter. Later on after dinner, I was looking out the window and I heard a very kind voice ask "Would you like some coffee?", she scared me a little bit because I was in a daze staring out the window. Now let me tell you, it wasn't the same rude flight attendant, this one was VERY VERY VERY nice, she was smiling at me, and I said "Yeah, I'll have one", and she gave it to me, and said "Enjoy", never taking the smile off her face. We finally began our decent into Charlotte, then the pilot came on and apologized once again for the delay in leaving SFO, and told us that the delay had been caused by a computer breakdown earlier that day in Rochester,NY. We touched down at Charlotte around 11:20 P.M. got my bags, got in the car, and went home.

Overall, my flight experience aboard flight 129 to SFO was Excellent!!!! I give them an "A". Coming back on flight 58, a different story. I thought the plane could have been cleaned more, and that certain rude flight attendant ALOT friendlier, but other than that, it was not too bad a flight. I give them a "B-"

It isn't the job of the flight attendants to pick up the crumbs from the floor. There are cleaning crews that are supposed to come on board while the aircraft is on the ground.

Great trip report. I enjoyed reading. Looks like that US Airways offers quite a good service. I have never flown on them, and so I was very interested in reading. My favourite US airlines is definitve American Airlines. They are extremly good. I always hate it when I have rude Flight Attendants. I have flown 4 times Delta Airlines and on 3 flights of them I had a rude Flight Attendants or bad service. Delta is for me the worst US airline.
By the way what do you think about the Airbus A320 airplanes? Althoug I'm european I prefer much more Boeing aircrafts that Airbus airplanes.
Greetings
Mike from Switzerland

Okay Jason, I must have forgotten that. Thanks for correcting me though!
Well, then I guess the cleaning crew did not do a good job in cleaning that plane while on the ground at SFO.

Hey Mike!
Glad you enjoyed the trip report. Yeah, I was pleasantly suprised at how well U.S. Airways did. If you would have read my trip report from last August when I flew from CLT to LAX and back. It would not have been like this.
But, to answer your question, I LOVE the Airbus A320 planes! They are very roomy, smooth, and nice! Like I said in the report, everyone was in awe over the A321. And it was interesting for me, because now I have flwon on a A321, A320, and last year I flew on an A319 coming back to CLT from LAX.
thanks
Adam

Hey Adam.
Thank's for your answer. Yeah it is amazing how much confortable a Flight Attendant can make a flight. I had almost always bad experiences on Delta flights. Unfriendly Flight Attendant and very bad service. I live in Europe and here is the service mostly quite good. Even Southwest was much better thant Delta domnestic flights. Anyway, I was surprised about your positive story about US Airways. What was not good on your last US Airways flight? I hope that I can fly soon US airways, they are also partner in Swissair frequent flyer programme. My favourite US airline is American. Their concept more room for Coach is just amazing, as well the service and the Flight Attendants. I loved the 777 flight from DFW to ZRH. As I like the USA very much I will come back to this wonderful country.
I agree with you that San Francisco is a very nice city. I also love Las Vegas and of course New York and Chicago and Seattle and Boston.
Greetings
Mike

Hey Mike
Yeah, I love American to! I haven't flown on them in a few years, the best flight attendant I ever had was actually on an American Eagle flight from LAS to LAX. She was so funny, and friendly, I remember she had the whole plane laughing so hard. She did an outstanding job! To this day, she is the best flight attendant my Dad and I have ever had.
The Reason my last trip aboard U.S. Airways was not that great was the fact taht they delayed my flight about 5 hours coming back from LAX, and the flight attendants were not friendly at all. Neither were the pilots and co-pilots for both flights.
But U.S. Airways is worth a try! I'm sure you could get a flight on the new A330 if you left out of Paris or London, or Rome.
Next year I'm going back to California, this time to San Diego, and I can't wait to fly into SAN, I've heard that landing there is pretty cool!

Hey Adam
Thank's again for answering. How did you like LAX airport? I liked it very much, I
flew this march from ZRH to LAX nonstop on a Swissair MD11. Diana Ross was in First Class, I saw her at the airport. I flow Business Class because I did a mileage upgrade and so I could enjoy the wonderful Swissair service in Business Class. Anyway we flow so deep over Greeland and Canada. We flow also over Las Vegas and through the window I could see the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas where I stayed later on for 4 days. This was funny. And arrival at LAX airport was amazing all this houses and the number of Boeing 747 from different airlines at the airport. I also liked San Francisco airport as well as Las Vegas airport. Through my window at Luxor hotel I could see the planes from Las Vegas airport. This was nice. Anyway hope that I can try soon US airways as well as Continental. I flow also several times Northwest Airlines, their domnestic service is bad. But I have to say that I would fly only American Airlines for going to the US, because they have the most space in seat-rows which I ever saw in Economy. Their new concept more room for coach is just great. The In flight system of them is also very good.
By the way I would love to try Midwest Express soon. They should be good too. Have you ever been to Europe or Asia? Especially asian airlines are very excellent in offering a very high service.
Greetings and take care

Hey Mike
I like LAX, probably the most interesting airport I have been to yet! When I went to Las Vegas, I stayed at Excalibur, and it was a good view of the airport as well!!!! I remember flying into LAS at night, and seeing the strip from the runway is just amazing!
Anyway, to answer your question, no I have never bene to Europe or Asia, but my family and I are planning a huge trip to Europe in 2003, so I'll definately be flying a large jet there! Some neighbors of ours went to Europe a couple of months ago and flew British Airways and were VERY VERY impressed! So we are looking at flying them possibly.

Hey Adam
Yes Los Angels airport is really amazing. How much space there is, I miss that in Europe, especially Switzerland, because our country is so small the airport area is also small. I loved also flying to the new Hong Kong airport. Last december I flow from MSP to Chicago Midway and back on NW. The service was not really great, but Chicago Midway is terrible, I mean I saw there may interesting planes, but it is all very small and and to many people for this old building. I flow only once British Airways and it was not very excellent, but it was a franchise partner of BA. I loved American Airliens very much for flying over the atlantic. They offers a very good product.
best regards and happy weekend

Swiss-Airplane: You will be happy to know that the Midway terminal is being rebuilt. The front ticket counter and baggage claim area is now completely redone and in a new building. I think a new gate area should be done within the next year. You're right - the old terminal is horrible, absolutely horrible, one of the worst in the country, if not the worst, considering the number of flights.

Very good report, but you MUST also learn to record the registration of the aircraft, most self-respecting aviation enthusiasts regard this as a HIGH PRIORITY.
