Going To SYD, QF Or Anz?

Thu Jun 07, 2001 6:40 am

I'm gonna be heading down to Sydney from JFK later on this summer, and I'm not sure whether to take Qantas or Air New Zealand. (United I think also flies there, but I hear so many bad things I'm just not going to keep taht as an option). Anyway, not to start a battle between partisans, any thoughts on which might be the better carrier? At the moment I lean towards Qantas b/c I can get molto miles on AA, and for some reason I feel it has a good, known reputation - though from stuff I read, they can sometmies be kinda perfunctory. (I look forward to Mirrodie's trip report on his flight on this route).

Thoughts anyone, especially from people who've tried both? Also, I'm going to be in economy, so who has the nicer sleeper seats up front is of academic concerns.

Thanks in advance.

My experience is solely on AirNZ, and I recommend them heartily.

It is my understanding, also, that NZ has a couple of inches better seat pitch than QF in economy (where I presume you'll be, like I was), and on a 14 hour flight, that makes BIG diff. If it's true (which I don't know). But like I said, NZ's service was top-notch when I flew them.

I had occasion to speak with a family (hubby=Aussie, wife=USA) in Australia who fly between homes in the USA and Australia 5-7 times/year, and they say that they always take United (I was shocked). They say that the transit via SFO beats LA (my experience- I'd rather pull my own teeth with rusty pliers than clear customs in LA).

That surprised me- but there you have it. Ciao.

Hi ...

Surprisingly my vote too, goes to UA. I've flown with them a couple of times bet. Aust. & USA (in Y-Class), as well as multiple flts. w/in Asia & the USA. I've always found the UA crews to be polite, friendly and fun to be around for 14 hours.

2nd place here (for me) would be QF ... you can strike it lucky with QF ... or not. The good flts are very good, the bad ones are very bad. There seems to be no middle ground with QF.

As for ANZ ... really, I'd rather swim! The 2 Pacific crossings I've made with ANZ were the same.. the crews were distant, aloof and seemed to treat everybody like it was their first time on a plane (never mind that some of the younger crew were probably still in Grade School when I first travelled overseas by air). Whilst the seat pitch might have been OK, warning !... they had very little recline movement, so if you feel like sitting almost upright for 14 hours, this is the place to come.

Hope this all helps.

From Experience: Qantas are good, Air New Zealand are great.

Qantas has your AA points though - and they do accrue quickly on pacific runs, so i'd say Qantas for points.

Qntas and AirNZ are both very good Carriers. Bad think about Qantas.... Food and Seat Pitch!! Awful!!

AirNZ have great service and Dominate this route very good (I mean in Passenger loads!!). They are notorious for great service!!

AirBear.... Just curious, when did you fly AirNZ?? Was it before 1995?? Because if it was, then no wonder you didn't like it!!
AirNZ has changed immensely since then, their seats recline quite abit, the have adjustable headrests and Footrests, and also are installing PTV's!!
AirNZ is 34" and Qantas is 32".

But if i was you, and i had miles on AA, then i would go AA and Qantas!!

Either one you pick, you will have a great flight!!

Yeah, I think that at the moment I am going to go with Qantas, because of the miles (practically enough for a free domestic ticket, I think) and also because (and correct me if I'm wrong) they have one-plane service to SYD from JFK, and that would save me a lot of worry about meeting my connection. And the alternate is to take AA to LAX and then QF to SYD, and somehow I feel more confident about that than flying United to the coast to make the connection, despite what some of the people above have said.

Thanks for the advice -- any other thoughts?

This is a real hard one.
Qantas and AirNZ are both great airlines, and while I am yet to experience Air New Zealand, I have heard some great things about them from a pal of mine (mikey)

Anyway, as you prefer QF with the AA miles thing, then I would stick with Qantas. Qantas is a great airline, and I have heard that their American service (Australia-America) is exceptionally better than some of their Asian and Australasian flights.

It would be a real temptation to say to you to try both, but as you sway towards QF, I would agree with that.
