ATL To ATH With Swissair

Thu Jun 28, 2001 7:57 am

I promised a trip report of my trip to Greece on Swissair, so here it is! Enjoy!

On Friday, June 15 my family and I went to the Atlanta airport. We checked our bags and went to the gate. I can't remember the gate number, but I know we were in the E terminal. The E terminal in ATL is the international terminal. For a while a Delta 763 was at our gate but eventually moved. I thought that for some weird reason, there was a chance that Swissair would be flying that plane. But close to when we should have been leaving, they made an announcement that the Swissair A330 was being repaired and that it would be at the gate momentarily. In a few minutes it arrived and then everyone boarded. We were near the rear of the aircraft in economy. The tilt of the windows that is noticable on Airbus widebodies is noticable inside too, but does not affect headroom or anything. I think that that whole part of the aircraft is tilted, including the ceiling, so it is still the same. We were in the tilted area so I noticed. The seats were really comfortable and the PTVs were great. When the plane took off, it seemed like it had a long takeoff run and when it took off, it was going very fast.

The aircraft reached a cruise altitude of 31000 feet early in the flight. The pilot announced that the aircraft would gain altitude as fuel would burn and he was right! The plane cruised at 41000 for a while as it got higher. The fastest it went was 607 mph, but was usually about 590-600 mph.

After that flight, I decided that being a flight attendant for Swissair was a VERY hard job. They worked nonstop to give great service. They were always giving drinks or snacks or hot, wet towels to anyone who wanted one. The meals were good too. The dinner was great! The entertainment was good too. They had three movie times in which movies started. You could select the movie you wanted to watch. After a little more than 8 hours, we landed in Zurich. The aircraft did not even use thrust reversers and took a long time to slow down.

Our next flight was about an hour later to ATH. All the seats were leather on the Swissair A321 and there was a lot of space! The aisles were huge too! The service on that flight was good also. The food was alright. Lunch was served. It was funny in first class when we walked by to get to our seats in economy. The layout seemed to be 2 1/2-3. There was a mini seat between two seats on one side. No one sat in those, so it must have been carryon baggage seat. Does anyone know what it is for? After about two hours, we landed in Athens. For the next 10 days, my family and I saw Athens, the Greek Isles, and Turkey. It was great.

On Tuesday, June 26, we boarded our flight from Athens to Zurich on a Swissair A321. It was about the same as the flight to Athens. Same seats, same service, same layout, same etc....

In Zurich, after only a half an hour, we boarded our flight to Atlanta on a Swissair A330. The service was a little better and the food was alright. The entertainment was good though and I enjoyed most of the flight. At 1:52 PM after a 9 hour and 15 minute flight, we landed.

Nice trip report.

One question: What did the meals consist of on your flights?

The mini seat is often able to have its back fold down to become a table. On many narrowbody inter-European flights, the configuration is convertible between coach and business class depending on demand. On say a twenty row aircraft, on one flight they may need 15 rows of business, so they just slide the curtain back to divide it that way. It is a much different system than in the US, but seems to work well.

That sounds right for the mini seat thing. The leather overlapped it from the other two seats. That just didn't seem important. Sorry about the meal thing. I really can't remember what they were. I remember that they were pretty good though.

Hey. Glad that you liked Swissair. Yes Flight Attendant there is really a hard job, I thought that too many times. Their service is really good and you got so many drinks and food as you want. Free alcohol so much as you want. Food is by the way based on a natural gourmet concept, which mean fresh, healthy and naturla gourmet food. Mostly it is a choice of Chicken and pasta. They just improved food a lot for the summer timetable. How was breakfast? I really have to say that I'm proud of Swissair and I like flying with them.
Swissair's Business Class is variabel, that's true. It depend on passenger configuration.

The planes looked like they were totally full on all flights. If they weren't, they were pretty close to full.

Different Seat Config In Business Class

Sun Jul 01, 2001 2:17 am

The reason for the extra small seat in between the two normal seats is so that people who fly in business class on most A319/320/321 will have larger seats than the ones in economy class. The center arm rests are moved closer together eliminating the seat inbetween. But you can still use the center table to put drinks on.
