SR/JB/HP And More!

Sat Jun 30, 2001 8:59 pm

Hello friends

This is a trip report of my holidays in the US. I hope you'll enjoy it.

Monday, May 28: SR3973 BSL-ZRH MD-83
This flight was operated by Crossair, plane was full, flight time was about 30 minutes. Service on this flight was great, even though it was such a short flight.
I had a glass of orange juice and some chocolate, leather seats. Smooth landing in ZRH!

Monday, May 28: SR112 ZRH-EWR A-330-200
We departed about one hour late in ZRH because our aircraft arrived late from maintenance. We departed and turned left so we had a good view of Zurich airport. We turned left again and soon we saw Basel, my home town, under us.
They served drinks and snacks and I watched CNN news on my PTV. We flew over Paris and soon they began to serve a hot meal. We overflew the Island of Jersey and followed the Southern Irish coast. I didn't watch a movie but listened to some music. Then we had a delicious ice-cream, followed by coffee/tea/whatever. Soon we reached Newfoundland and Nova Scotia and the flight attendants began to serve sandwiches. I liked them and they offered me a second one. Then we began our approach into EWR, landing was a little bit bumpy. Flight time was 8.50 hours. I loved this flight, Swissair has a really good service!

Tuesday, May 29: JB97 JFK-DEN A-320
Our flight left at 9.20pm. I was at the airport about 3 hours earlier. I checked in my baggage and went to my gate. There I bought my most expensive sandwich in my life: it almost cost 7 bucks. We departed on time and had an awesome view of NY area. We overflew Pennsylvania, Lake Erie and we saw Detroit and Chicago. Very smooth landing in Denver. I liked JB so far: PTV's, leather seats and the flight fare, of course: I only paid 100$ and something for this flight, taxes included! But then I waited for my baggage but only one piece (of two) arrived. They left my sleeping bag in New York. Anyway, they sent it home to Switzerland a couple of days later, but I had to buy a new one.

Thursday, May 31: HP483 DEN-PHX A-319
Denver is a nice airport! We boarded our plane and left on-time. We crossed the Rocky mountains and landed in PHX soon. Sevice was o.k., I had a coffee and snacks.

Thursday, May 31: HP6874 PHX-OXR (Oxnard,California), Beechcraft 1900D
This flight was operated by Air Midwest in Mesa Airlines colours. It was very loud inside this aircraft. Our pilot left open the cockpit door while taxiing and our first officer made some jokes ("at least everybody has a window seat"). An elderly lady in front of me almost got a heart attack, she was afraid of this aircraft.
Take-off was like a rocket. After two hours we approached OXR after a very bumpy ride (I was more worried about the old lady in front of me...). Our pilot landed the plane very smooth. Beech1900D-that's flying!!

Saturday, June 2: HP783 LAX-PHX A-320
nice flight. I always like to fly into PHX (skyline!) I had a coke and snacks.

Saturday, June 2:HP68 PHX-ANC A-319
Very long take-off roll, flight time was 5.30 hours. We had some drinks and a hot meal that consisted of cannellonis, small salad and ...Swiss chocolate. Approach into ANC was awesome: mountains, mountains, mountains, you can almost touch them during approach. smooth landing in ANC. I reached the last frontier!

I had two beautiful weeks in Alaska. Once I made a mountain tour by plane. We departed at McCarthy airport with a Cessna (Wrangell Mountain Air) for a 70 minutes flight. Awesome!
At Homer, I had a 10 minutes flight with a De Havilland Beaver (Beluga Air). We departed on Beluga Lake and flew to Across The Bay. I expected a rough landing on the sea but it was very, very smooth.

Sunday, June 17: HP251 ANC-PHX A-319
Oue flight left at 1.45 in the morning! We had a beautiful departure and then they served a hot breakfast. After that I fell asleep and woke up when we were approaching PHX!

Sunday,June 17: HP680 PHX-EWR A-319
After departure they served a hot sandwich or a chicken-pasta-salad. I had the salad and I enjoyed it. Then I fell asleep again. We landed in EWR and when we taxied out of the runway I saw that the we used almost the whole runway! (it must be a very short runway, which one is it?)

Sunday, June 17: SR113 EWR-ZRH A-330-200
I changed terminal by monorail, it was very easy. We departed NY by night, and flew over Manhattan. I had a beer and ate dinner, then I slept until we reached Europe. SR service was great again and we landed very smooth.
That's it! My trip back lasted exactly 24 hours. Although I liked all flights I was exhausted when I arrived.

Please feel free to post any comments! Thank you.

Hi RJ100. Great trip report. Very interesting for reading. I liked it very much. Great to hear those good stories about Swissair. They need our support at the moment and I'm glad that they are making again a better service which is already very good. When I flow to Las Angeles this march I enjoyed also an excellent Swissair service.
By the way which destination in the US on this trip liked you most. On my last US trip this year I flow for the first time American and I only can say that I love them. They were excellent. I flow also Southwest, United Shuttle and Delta on this trip and American way by far the best. Delta the worst. I flow back to Switzerland with AA via Dallas. Great flight and of course great plane. American has a new concept more room for Coach and the seat pitch is really amazing.
I never know what I should think about America West. Fact is that in most US airlines the serive is worse compare to European airlines.
Greetings to BSL

Hey there in ZRH

I'm glad you liked my trip report.
You're right, service on Swiss and I think European carriers in general is better than on U.S. carriers. But some of the U.S. carriers are really improving, such as America West Airlines. So I recommend this airline to you if you're in the U.S. someday.

P.S.: I'm flying BSL-ZRH-JFK (RJ100/MD-11) next Monday and back on Aug.15
(A330/RJ100), all flights on LX and SR!
Let's hope that SR and their partner airlines will come out of trouble they are facing right now.

Kind regards,
