Hey guys, just a quickie.
28 July FLL - ORD on United #451 booked in First Class, seat 3C.. Boeing 727-200... my friend Mike joined me on this one. Amazingly, our flight was full and we pulled out of the gate ON TIME.. go figure. Takeoff was fast and uneventful as we climbed out over to Orlando, then up the coast along to Jacksonville, then direct to Bowling Green, KY, up to Monticello IN then direct into ORD. When we landed, we took a lil "drive" around the airport and killed our 8 minute early landing.... we pulled up to Gate B4 at O'Hare... Inflight food was a choice of "hot" or "cold" and according to our JFK based flight attendant, it all taste the same anyway, so I opted for the hot, hoping it was the same as last time, apple pancakes (yum).. but it wasn't... my egg had peppers in it, the sausage was good, as were the potatoes... the pancakes were nothing to get excited about.. they were honey maple. The fruit platter was good, as usual.
28 July ORD - EWR on United #642 booked in United First, seat 4C in a Boeing 757-200. Again, we somehow managed to depart on time from gate B15 (Gate B13 was missing I think!) and First Class was full, but Coach seemed about 2/3rds full. There were also about 3 kids up front, not sure why anyone would waste their miles or upgrade certs on their kids... but oh well. Departure was on 4L and we did an immediate turn to 140 out of ORD and shot out over South Bend to Toledo, then along the lake into northern Pennsylvania. Inflight service was good, and our lead FA was funny, cracking as many jokes as possible. Food service was a lunch, and I completely forgot what I had, but we *had* menus, go figure. I think I had BBQ chicken with mashed potatoes and a salad... the chicken was good, but they snuck some onions in the middle of it (grr) and I had to tear the thing to bits trying to get them out. I didn't really touch the salad as it was that "upscale" lettuce... I much prefer the iceburg lettuce they give the "pheasants" in back. Movie wise, it was some damned sports program followed by the News, then drew carey (which they cut off.. damn them)... the episode was the one where MiMI has a "mini-mimi" and they both harass drew. AGain, we landed on time, but from the north.. it was cool watching an ATR fly right toward us then turn for approach on 19R (??). We stopped short of crossing the runway and waited for other planes to try to cross 19R (?) and we all did it at the same time.. was pretty cool.. we were into the gate at 141PM EST and my bags followed shortly thereafter. Again, I just flew United into O'Hare ontime, now into Newark. I was beginning to think that my luck is just too good.
My friend Ian picked me up with his dog Dana... Ian moved up to NYC with his partner, Greg, who is the HR director at the new Ritz Carlton @ Battery Park in NYC.... Greg used to be a manger at the Palm Beach Ritz We'll miss them down here... but they're happier on Staten Island. Anyway, Ian drives like the damn mexican he is and the dog almost threw up on me... I was afraid i was going to get car sick too.... I had enough time to hit the Village, SoHo, Chelsea, and Little Italy... this trip was too quick to really do any "tourist" stuff.... and we decided to cancel the room at the Hyatt cause of the time constraints.. I then went out w/ Ian and everyone, but headed back on the X1 bus cause I almost fell asleep at the coffee house waiting for mikey to call us and go clubbing... i SO wanted to hit "Heaven" as well
Anyway, the next day we slept in until noon and headed off to LaGuardia...
29 July LGA-ORD on United flight 675 booked in United First, seat 3A.. Boeing 727-200. I expected this thing to be delayed, and it was.. the inbound aircraft from O'hare was about 30 minutes late, pushing us back only 10 minutes (go figure). Preboarding went smoothly, but Wendy, our FA, didn't have her galley yet.. it was kinda cool watching how the caterors literally pulled it out then put it all back in. So no gin & tonics for mike & i.. oh well. We pushed back from the gate about 15 minutes late, then Wendy told us (not on the PA) that the new lotto system at LaGuardia had been changed and that each passenger has to pay, and whichever plane raised the most money would take off first... the guys behind us pulled out a few $100 bills and everyone in First Class laughed. Depature was really cool out of LGA... we took off on 13 and did an immediate turn south, then another turn east, then west on our way to Chicago... flight was moderately bumpy. Wendy offered me food first (I guess i was the only Premier Exec on the flight) and it was an italian turkey sandwich or chicken caesar salad on this snack flight... i took the sandwich.. which was decent... i didn't finish myfood though, except for the typical Fruit Platter... it also came with VERY VERY hot mustard and almost made it unbearable... Wendy eventually gave me a total of 3 rum & cokes on the flight.. but she was totally kick-ass.... Our approach into ORD was very fast and quick... we came in over Glenview then out to Elgin and turned for a quick landing on to runway 9R.. again, we did a tour of O'Hare that killed our 20 minute early landing... we pulled into gate C23 about 5 minutes early...
I met up with my friend Mel who was working the Dusseldorf flight in 3 hours and he threatened to downgrade me... i was ready to cry. He also told me they were offering $600 in vouchers for volunteers for Ft Laud...
29 JULY ORD-FLL on United 528 booked in United First seat 4D.. Boeing 727-200... our inbound flight from Denver was a tad late getting in, and they were 1 flight attendant short... but they boarded us quickly and Jay didn't give us any pre-departure alcohol due to the quick turn. Damn him! We did push back at about 715P, only 15 minutes late.. and we were off the ground at 739PM.... the pilots made up a ton of time here... Jay was very typical of United male flight attendants.. very attentive, very professional, and very funny... he was ORD based and I'd guess he was in his late 20s. Again, no menus... and all we were given were BBQ ribs which were very very good... but again, i didnt' finish it all.. Somehow the flight passed by quickly, probably because of the 10 gin & tonics or so that i put down... and we landed on time.... and i could barely walk down the jetway :P
anyway, somehow i made it through the 3 most delay plagued airports in the US system on United, of all people, on time. it was a cool trip!
