ATA 757-300 Trip Report

Mon Sep 03, 2001 12:19 pm

Helllo everyone, Im back at Airliners.net and finally at ERAU. anyway lets get to the flight report. Well we left my hometown at 1:00 PM for my 4:30 pm flight. I was both excited, nervous and sad cause I was leaving my family and friends behind but I was also flying a brand new ATA 757-300. We got into SJU at 2:00 pm to find a small line at the ATA ticket counter (which were now moved to the old TWA counters, TWA now moved to the AA terminal). Anyway the ticket agents at the ATA counter were extremely slow and the line kept getting longer and longer. When we finished checking in our bags the line reached the USDA inspection, the ticket agents fir ATA which were only 2 were extremely slow.Anyway after that we headed towatds terminal B were our ATA flight would be departing . Other aircraft present that day at SJU were
a UAL- A320 headed towards ORD
-US Airways headed towards Charlotte
-Iberia 747-200
-Delta 757-200
-2 Delta 767-200's
-1 Air Santo Domingo Beech 1900D
-6 AA 757-200's
-3 AA A300's
-5 AA 737-800's
-2 TWA 757-200'S
-1 TWA MD-80
-1 CopA 737-200
-1 Aces A320
Our stunning looking 757-300 arrived at 3:40 PM, the plane arrived from Orlando and Indianapolis and it looked like hundreds of people were stepping out of this flight. Our flighht was scheduled to depart at 4:30 PM but I was almost sure our flight would be delayed . Flight 438 started boarding at 4:20 PM . Boarding was horrible, people were in front of that boarding door as soon as preboarding commenced . This further delayed the flight and we eventually left the gate at 5:00 PM. The plane smelled like new and looked like new, another first impression was how long the plane was. We were in row 5 so I couldn't go to the back of the plane, another thing I notied was the little legroom these ATA planes have. The safety video of the 757-300 is really modern and innovative it looked really nice and the audio system on the 757-300 is really good and clear. We took off at 5:10 PM and some 10 minutes after takeoff the f/a's passed by selling audio cords for 2 dollars, after that the f/a's passed by offering fischer peanuts, Fruit and Grain Bars, and Biscuff cookies, the also offered some refreshments accompaning the snacks. One weird thing was that the cups used to serve refreshments were Continental cups. The flight was pretty smooth with some occasional turbulence and the f/a's were pretty nice. Our flight arrived into Orlando at 7:40 PM and we got into Terminal A gate 16. ATA is a pretty good airline and the service is pretty good, the only bad thing I found was the cramped seating. Anyway I would recommend ATA to anyone and by the way if any if you are at ERAU you could sure contact me .

Sorry I didn't catch where you were flying to, MCO? Glad you found ATA good. I liked them on the way home to LAX from DCA. I guess they've raised the prices on the head phones cuz I bought mine for just a buck. Sucks that it took so long to check in, I don't remember them having any problems like that at DCA, but I'm sure there are lots more people flying them at SJU.

Nice report.

Another good things were the seats, which eventhough had very little legroom they were in leather and they had these kind of head support that made them actually pretty nice. I did find the aisle to be quite narrow and small.

chepos,

Im glad that you enjoyed your flight on the new 757-300. We are very proud of the aircraft.

Also, as an employee of ATA I would like to apologize for the long lines and slow service you encountered. This is not the type of service that we want to deliver to our cusomers.

The saftey video you mentioned is brand new. It is completely computer generated and uses no real people in it.

Take care!

Fly ATA the 757-300 performed extremely well on the flight I was on. It was also a surprisingly quite aircraft, I have a question on ATA-Are you guys going to change your uniform to this more updated look?

I am not an employee of ATA, but I can answer for him. On a press release on their webiste, I read that yes, they ARE changing uniforms.

A completely new ATA, from uniforms to planes to style of business.

Great report! I was wondering what this airplane would be like. As for the CO cups, I bet the ATA catering company in SJU also handles CO. Perhaps the cups were mixed up, or maybe the caterer didn't have a supply of ATA cups. I have seen things like that. When I was working in Toronto on a training mission in the 1980's, my UA 727 was boarded with a galley that had AA napkins. The flight attendant let us know before departure and we were able to get the correct ones onboard before departure time!

Nice trip report, Chepos.
I saw pictures of the 757-300 in ATA colours, it looks awesome, sleeker and longer even than a DC-8-63. If I'll ever fly it, I will try to get seats in the back (45 rows or so?), you might actually see the aisle bowing and moving if you look to the front from there, what's rumoured.
But it's sad it replaced the Tristar on ATA scheduled services. I'd love to fly that one without going to Hawaii.
I flew ATA last year and it checking in was horrible at Midway, I hope they'll do better now in the new terminal. What exactly is ERAU? A university? Lot's of luck and fun in the US!
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

ATA's lines are always horrendously long... I don't think I've *ever* seen a small line w/ them...  Smile/happy/getting dizzy They pack their planes, that's for sure...

I miss the old livery already... :/

The new Uniforms will debut early 2002. We begin the fittings for them this month. MDW employees are currently wearing a "transitional" uniform that is similiar to what the new look will be.

If there is anyone in MCO the 757-300 comes through up to 4 times a day , depending on the day of the week now....good chance to catch a peek ot it.

We took delivery of our third 757-300 this week along with two additional 737-800's.

Nice trip report Chepos!!
I've been to SJU several times over the years, and my family and I stayed in a condo overlooking runway 8- its a heck of an airport!!! San Juan's like a 2nd home.
Iberia is taking 747-200s in there now? It used to be DC-10s. Any new airlines?

I've wanted to fly ATA, they seem like a nice airline, and all of their paint schemes are cool. A brand new fleet doesnt hurt either! 738s and 753s, along w/ classics like the older 757s, 727 and L-1011!!  Big grin

Any way of finding out if ATA will be starting service to CMH soon?
Great report!

Glad to hear the report was good. Those 753's are sure nice, but I am really going to miss the L1011. If you every make it back up to MCO, drop me a line.
