KHI-DXB-KHI On Emirates

Tue Sep 04, 2001 5:56 am

Helloo everyone....in accordance with the tradition here at airliners.net....i'd like to share my short weekend trip to Dubai with all of you....

Wednesday,August 29th
I wanted to meet my friend who was in dubai for a few days before going back to school in USA.I too have to join school right away in Boston and i wanted to stop in dubai on my way there on Swissair. That was not possible as my US-KHI ticket was issued in reverse. Anyhow so i had to buy a new ticket altoghether for dubai....Emirates was my choice.
The departure time from KHI for this flight was 2230 but since its such a crowded time at KHI specially the EK counter, i decided to check in more then 2 hours in advance. Luckily very few people had showed up till then and i was through immediately. I was assigned seat 22K....all EK flights are now no-smoking ofcourse. I was travelling economy but i proceeded towards the first class lounge at KHI airport since one of my credit cards allows me to do so. I had a good deal of time to kill......i had some food.....i asked someone over there to get me a pack of cigarattes as i forgot mine at home. They have internet facility there so i spent an hour just browsing. This was my third time on this particular flight and the past two times it was delayed as everyone could not board with in time......but this time even before boarding it was announced that our flight was nearly 40 mins late. Finally we made our way down to gate 26 where i expected our B777 to be waiting for us. I was surprised to find that it was actually an A330-200 in high density configuration that was taking us instead of the scheduled B777......im sure Emirates777 would know the reasons behind that. The flight was 100% full in all two classes....i knew that would be the case as i had a tough time getting a seat for this flight. At KHI i saw PIA B743, A310 B737's and A300....there was an Ethiopian B767-300 and also the domestic Pakistani airlines. We took of on calm Karachi evening.....view from the exterior cameras was cool and it was cool to see all the city lights from my window seat. Food was served a bit into the flight. It was rice with lamb curry. Dessert was excellent as always. Even though we took of late....they tried to make up for it in speed and we got to dubai only 15 mins late after the....flying time between khi-dxb is normally 1 hour 45 mins. We landed in dubai close to midnight....the busiest time there....and busy it was. So much so that like many other planes we could not get an airbridge and had to get off in buses. To get off a A330-200 load of people meant alot of buses and time. I was on the last bus out and there were so many buses from different flights out there that there was a traffic jam!! Took us 20 minutes in the bus. But let me take this oppurtunity to say how amazing it was to see planes from all over the world in dubai then. There was a Delta MD-11 in old colours, Ghana airways B767-200, PIA A300, Kuwait A320, Cathay B777, Airfrance A310, BA 777, Air India B747, Biman DC-10, Royal Brunei B767, KLM B767, Oman air regional jet , a Malaysian B737-400 (wonder what was that doing there) and ofcourse countless EK B777, A330's. But the lines in immigration were soo long and took forever to move....by the time i stepped out where my friend was waiting for me....it was nearly 1:30 am.

Yesterday 2nd September
After an excellent 4 days in dubai it was time to head back. I took the evening EK flight to KHI departing at 1815. I checked an hour and 20 mins before that. And i was only quarter way through the long walk to the gates area when they started calling out for the flight.......a few mins later they announed last call for Ek 603 leaving for KHI. At the back of my mind i knew they are just doing this to call everyone on this flight well within boarding time since alot of people tend to get late between DXB-KHI. But i didnt risk anything and i couldnt even stop at the duty free. I went to the gate and we waited a good 40 mins till the boarding actually started. The plane this time was the B777-300......my first time on this version of the B777. The flight was only about half full....All the traffic is towards dubai these days from KHI. At dubai i saw 2 Singapore 747 megarks take off, i saw an Air India A310, Saudi B777, Sri Lankan A330 or maybe 340....could only see the tail, i was surprised to see a Martinair B747-200 there too. We took of smoothly on time on clear dubai evening.....cameras were again good but i loved the view from my window seat. We cruised at 11277 metres at about 950Km/h. The sunset from the plane looked great.....at one one point i could see the sun from the forward camera. The food was rice with chicken curry.....not as good as the lamb. Desset again great. Before we even knew it.....we started the decent to KHI. We made the usual northerly approach to KHI where the plane literally flies past the whole city then turns back towards the runway. The forward camera should the 2 parallel runways at KHI....we landed at the one which is further from the terminal. I have mentioned before and i would say it again that i find it amazing how the B777 goes sooooo quiet during landing....it really facsinating. At KHI i saw the usual PIA planes.... there was also a Thai A330-300 going to either MCT or BKK.
All in all it good to fly Emirates again. Its a good airline. I do have a question for Emirates777 incase he reads this report.... what are the primary or the usual B777-300 routes for Emirates????
INSHALLAH tommorow i should be flying again,......this time back to Boston via ZRH on Swissair.Seat is not confirmed on the KHI-ZRH leg but i hope it does as my classes start tomorow.
Thanks everyone

Great trip report, I really enjoyed it. Hope you have an equally pleasant flight of swissair, if not better back to the states. I haven' t been to Dubai, since 1989, but the way you described the airport action, I am now very tempted to go back to my birthplace after some 12 years. Dubai is a great city!

Dubai sure is a great city....you should definately go there sometime....alot has changed since 1989.
Infact right now i am sitting at the KHI airport lounge waiting for my boarding to be announced on SR395. Apparantly the flight has not even arrived from DXB yet so we are behind schedule. My flight to Zurich will also make a 50 min stop in DXB....SR has 5th freedom on KHI-DXB. Flight to Zurich from here is full in economy and Biz apparantly. Till my next report....good bye....

Hi KHI747,
Thanks for the trip reporT.

I was actually in Dubai from 29 Aug till 1 Sep. I did an apt round at around 1 o'clock in the morning on my way back from AUH and remember seeing the DL MD11.

The reason your flight was switched to an A330 hd was because the plane designated to op. your flight, a B777-200 high density was instead allocated to Nairobi/Entebbe that day. This was because this route has been experiencing extremely strong demand over the summer. In fact, this route, due to be op. by a B777-200 low density has been operated with a high density plane instead due to the high loads.

As for your question on the B777-300s, here's one i prepared earlier.

All flights mentioned in the schedules are operated by Boeing 777-200/200ERs except the following which are op. by B777-300:

EK1/2 Daily DXB-LHR and back

EK068/069 Mo/We/Fr DXB-SIN-MEL and back

Daily DXB-BKK-HKG and back

EK301/302 Mo/Tu/We/Fr/Sa DXB-JED and back

EK600/601 Tu/We/Th/Fr/Sa DXB-KHI and back
EK602/603 Th/Su DXB-KHI and back
