I used nwa.com checkin for this flight and was able to get a bulkhead windown seat. I have found the legroom on the NW 727 to be fairly good, but the bulkhead is always better. The airplane was looking a little less than new. By that I mean the seats were faded, the ceiling panels a little faded, the overhead bins a faded, but overall it was still a clean looking airplane. This full flight left that gate a few miniutes early as a thunderstorm began to appear out to the west. We taxied pretty fast to the runway and took off south and away from the storm. Flying time was announced as only 1 hour and 10 minutes. Beverage service was offered in the main cabin and I had tomato juice. The flight attendant asked me if I liked it with or without ice (which I thought was nice) and also asked if I wanted a slice of lemon or lime (which I also thought was nice). We arrived early into MEM and parked at gate B21. I was very happy to see that my connecting flight to DC was showing ontime and departing from gate B11 (not very far).

nwa.com allowed me to checkin for this flight also, so I selected another bulkhead window seat. I asked the gate agent what "meal served" meant, and in her lovliest southern accent replied "breakfast service". I aksed her if that meant I should run to Burger King and she said (again in her lovliest southern accenrt) "sir, it is a full breakfast, bagel, cereal, banana, and hey it's good for you so don't go spendin' your money at Buger King on somethin' that's not good for you!" I took her advice and said thankyou. I was lucky enough to have one of the 5 empty seats in the main cabin next to me!
MEM has the new gate display monitors. They show alot of information such as little picture that ask you to have your boarding pass out as your board, to have a seat if you have a boarding pass and "relax" until boarding, diagrams that show how you should properly stow carryons (wheels out so more bags fit). I also read in the WorldTraveller magazine that if the flight is delayed due to the infamous catch all "weather delay" Northwest actually shows a radar map on the gate display and will point out to passengers what weather is causing the delay. That is a very nice feature and shows that they obviously can't lie about weather delays. We left the gate early (as I have noticed becoming standard on NW flights when the weather is good) and taxied out to the runway. There was no line and we took off right away. The A320 was immaculate inside. I figured it had just come out of cleaning or something because there was not so much as a crumb on the carpet. Breakfast was served and as promised was filling enough and healthy too. I liked the warm bagels especially. I thought that was a nice touch. I again asked for tomato juice and the flight attendant offered the ice/no ice and lemon/no lemon option WOW! We landed in DCA and taxied to the gate. I was very happy that the early arrival meant I would be spending an extra 27minutes with my family this labor day weekend. Too bad most of that time was spent in traffic!!!

I checked in at the airport at the gate with some very friendly Northwest agents. They told me that the flight from DTW to IND was overbooked in the main cabin and the only way they could get me a seat on that flight was in First Class and they asked me if I minded...."NO" was my answer. Then they said that seeings how I was in First Class from DTW they may aswell put me in First Class to DTW..."THANKS" I said. Anway, the flight was about 3/4 full and departed early. About 20 minutes later we were airborn. The DC9 was very clean. The overhead bins didnt even have the usual scuff marks from carryon bags. First Class service was only beverage on this flight because total flight time was 1hr 3minutes and it was a late night departure. The flight attendant came around a couple of times to make sure we had all we needed, but I noticed there were only 2 flight attendants so I think he went back to help the other one in the main cabin. We landed at 9:20P and taxied toward the "penalty box" as the pilots call it. Just as we assumed our position next to another NW DC9 and an NW757, the engines spooled up and we made our way to the gate. Good, cause I hate holding out there looking at the terminal. We did pull up really close to the new concourse. I could see the lights on inside the building, it has come along way. We parked at gate C2 at the very start of the C concourse. Usually I am all the way at the end of the C and have to go all the way to the F or G to make my connector! Tonight I would be going to F3 for the IND flight that was showing ontime.

A319 ****N332NB*** NWA's newest aircraft!!!

I was so exited when I asked the gate agent what kind of plane this was and he said "oh it's our newest plane in the entire fleet, A319, number 3132. About 1 week old, if that" As soon as I stepped onboard I could smell that new car smell. The plane was so clean and the windows didn't even have finger prints on them. There were only 3 of us in First Class, while every seat in the main cabin was full. We left the gate a couple of minutes early and turned towards the runway closest to the F and G concourse. We pulled up short, the pilot called the FA on the phone, and she took her list back to the main cabin and moved about 5 people into First Class. Apparently this was for weight and balance and I think she moved Elites who werent upgraded or something. Anyway, the pilots said we would be underway shortly and the fligt would be 34 minutes once airborne. Wow, that was short! The FA offered full beverage service to those of us in First Class, but I think the main cabin had a choice of Pepsi or Water. 108 people in the main cabin is a lot to serve on such a short flight. About 1/2 way through the flight I noticed that the "no smoking" sign was off. I told the flight attendant as she walked by and she went and told the pilots. The pilot came on and it was pretty funny when he said "some of you may have noticed that the no smoking sign has gone off....no...no...put your cigarettes away....you can't smoke...it's just that this plane is so darn new we havent figured out how to turn it back on again...(laughter in the cabin)...followed by..."oh wait..there we go (the light comes back on)...sorry for the inconvience, and when the plane lands let's all make the run to the smoking lounge as orderly as possible! It was one of the funniest things I have ever heard a pilot announce. We arrived a couple of minutes early into IND and I completed another great, ontime trip with NWA!

Glad you had a great trip! I just completed my LAX trip and it was great. How did you like the relaxing music and atmosphere at MEM? I like those display screens. All my NWA flights were on clean, comfortable aircraft with great crews.

I always find MEM to be a nice place to connect. It is a big airport, but has a "hometown" feel to it.

Another good report Nwa747-400. I have always had an ontime or early flight on Northwest except for only ONE time when there was a heavy snowstorm at DTW.

I love the smell of a new plane!!! Glad you liked your trip on NWA.. I was on a NW 722 a few weeks ago, and was in seat 5E (MEM-TPA)!!! Bulkhead is nice, but I actually found the DC9-50 I returned back on had better leg room for bulkhead...

The wall of the bulkhead on the 727 cuts into the legroom. I prefer the soft bulkheads of the A319/A320 and DC9 family as you have space for your carryon under the last row of first class and also space to strectch your legs.
