Service On Qantas Or United From LAX-SYD?

Mon Sep 10, 2001 4:44 am

My family and I may be going to Sydney or Melbourne in April. If we go, we will be flying on either United or QANTAS from LAX.

How is the service, and what can I expect on these miserably long flights? How long is it? How is the in-flight entertainment? I'm just trying to get a heads-up as to what to expect if we go.

Thanks!

Qantas service and food is very good, well most of the time anyway! Since you are leaving in April, theres a strong possibility that you might get PTVs on QF, as PTVs are being progressively fitted out on all Qantas B747-400.

Not so sure about United. Also, why don't you consider Air New Zealand, they are an excellent airline to fly with, in spite of their financial problems right now.

Hope this helps...!

Here's my opinion on the matter:

If you're flying ECONOMY CLASS...go with Air New Zealand. They have one of the best Economy Class seats in the world, with proper footrests, adjustable lumbar support, and a multi-way adjustable headrest. The United Economy & Qantas Economy seats do not compare to those onboard AirNZ. So far, none of the airlines in the LAX-AKL/SYD/MEL market offer in-seat video in Economy Class (Qantas is planning on installing them, but it probably won't be on your flight).

If you're flying BUSINESS CLASS...go with either United or Qantas. Their Business Class seats are superior to that of AirNZ. While United's seats have the Backcycler system (which is like a built-in massager), the Qantas seats are fully-electronic. I'm partial to the United Business seats. In terms of entertainment, it's essentially the same (9/10 Channels of Movies & TV, 12+ Channels of Music, & Airshow).

If you're flying FIRST CLASS...go with either United or Qantas. While I prefer United overall, for First I'd probably say go for Qantas because they have the sleeper suits and service that tends to be a bit more personalized than United's. Note that the seat features (ie, personal video players, electronic-adjustments, laptop-power, etc) are generally the same on both airlines. And don't worry...all Qantas and United aircraft operating flights between LAX and SYD have the fully-flat sleeper seats in First Class.

One final note...Air New Zealand does operate between LAX and SYD, on the contrary to what many say/believe. So you can get on one of their flights in Economy Class. I would strongly recommend against flying AirNZ in Business Class or First Class...their service in those classes has nothing on that of United and Qantas.

**AS FOR ENTERTAINMENT...well, United just won the World Airline Entertainment Association Award for BEST OVERALL IN-FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMMING. And after doing many a flight with United, I can definitely say that their in-flight entertainment diversity and excellence is second to none!

GOOD LUCK!

UnitedFirst summed it up nicely, though i have to disagree with what he said about Service being more superior in J and C class on QF and UA compared to NZ. Entertainment is much more supurior in J and C on QF and UA than NZ, But if service is what you are looking for NZ will be the best followed by QF.

AirNewZealand pointed out a little deficiency in my report. That is, AirNZ does offer truly excellent service onboard all of their flights. While their seats may not be the world leaders in First and Business, just this past year AirNZ won "Best Airline Business Class", which says a lot.

Air New Zealand truly is the "World's Warmest Welcome".

Good luck!

Surprisingly I've heard nice things about UA Economy of late. The catering has been popular, with lots of snacks, like sandwiches etc offered between meals during the night and frequent rounds of drinks being offered throughout, with buffet set in the galley. Crews don't feature as well, generally good and friendly but quite a few who are very unfriendly. Certainly the reports have been good of late on the Australia routes.

The complaint of QF is crew who dump a meal in your lap, clear it up and vanish for 11 hours. I've flown them on the route and thought they were OK, but there was not a lot 'offered', everything had to be asked for and some crew were more helpful than others at this.

ANZ have a good reputation for service, very good space, but a lot of whinging about the catering not being up to scratch with child size portions. I am boycotting ANZ for the "go to hell" attitude they've shown their 16,000 Australian unemployed former Ansett Staff and the asset stripping of Ansett in the hours before Ansetts Receivership (Chapter 11 equiv.) making a restart of Ansett almost impossible - as bad as Ichan at TWA at least. I recommend others also boycott them, but they none the less please travellers on long flights and some people swear by them.

I have taken Air NZ LAX-SYD-LAX, here are my thoughts, I flew in Pacific Class, which is their Economy class...

Service: Excellent...cant complain at all on it...

Food: So-So...not much choices, but its edible...

Seat: Excellent, the economy seat compares with a US domestic first class seat, even better in some respects...

IFE: Horrible...the audio programs are only about an hour long, and out of 4 movies on one of the flights, I never heard of 3 of them...no PTV's in Y as of yet...

Overall: I would recommend them to anyone....

I had quite a nice time on QF from LA to SYD a coupla weeks ago, and am flying the return trip in a few days. Look for a longer trip report soon, but suffice it to say it was a lot better than it could have been.

Have done QF and NZ, both econ and biz, go NZ for econ, QF for biz, I actually slept 7 hours on LAX-AKL with NZ last year, seat was BRILLIANT, I'm 183cm, and felt great AFTER the 11 hour flight!

Food on NZ was fine, their mixed grill service wonderful frankly, good selection, all well done. (For yanks, this is like a Denny's Grand Slam breakfast I think).

QF is _getting better_, I've done them four times in the last two years SYD-LAX, I think they're "reasonable" service-wise, and recently, quite good food-wise.

PTVs will indeed be great -- no more laptop at funny angles!

Cheers!

Thanks to everybody for your help!

I never thought of Air New Zealand, from what I'm hearing, their economy class seat is awesome!! That may not be a bad idea. When Qantas installs their PTVs (if they put them in in time) I wonder if they will be better than US Airways A330s PTVs, those are hard to beat! The way my mom likes adventures, we may do Singapore Airlines through NRT and SIN!

We'll have to see if we're even going because of what happened in NYC, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

Well I can say United Business is by far the most superior to all of the 3 airlines. Economy goes to ANZ for sure! I really did enjoy them. BIZ class on ANZ as said before didnt compare to UAL. Having flown nearly 250 hours in UAL's biz class and nearly 40 hours in coach on the 747-400 over the pacific in the past 2 years I can honestly say for Biz... do united. Coach ANZ, and qantas... Hmmm all i can say is somewhere in between! If you do biz class do make sure you get the window exit seat on the upper deck! thats by far my favourite seat I have ever come across!! Odd enough I would almost have to take that one over the first class suite in UAL and someday that could be an option being a Non rev for UAL! well Have fun in Sydney! I should have been going tonight, but my other non rev friend backed out at the last minute... oh well next week! Sydney is by far one of the best cities on earth!! Hope you have a great time there and enjoy the flight down to the full extent!

Cheers!

I did UAL business to SYD from LAX, and back, and it was very nice. I took the 10:00PM flight, so you just get on, sleep, couple hours later get up, have food, watch a couple movies, snack, relax, and then land. Great flight, you'll enjoy, have fun. ANZ has superb business class as well, you'll enjoy both. I never flew Qantas, so i'm not sure about them...

kind regards,

This is dated information, so take it for what it's worth.

7 years ago I flew LAX-Sydney-Melbourne on Quantas economy (the 744 was the Nalanji?? Dreaming). The seat back was broken, and one of the overhead lights wasn't working. I told the steward, but he gave me an unsatisfying "Oh, well. . ." type of response. I never wrote a letter to QF, though I planned to . . .

11 years ago I flew ANZ bucket shop economy from Gatwick to LAX (DC-10). It still remains in my memory as one of my best flights (food, service, comfort, etc.). As a sidenote, my return to LHR (via JFK) on the then-dieing Pan Am remains in my memory as one of my worst flights. . .

In Economy class on QANTAS, I assume you're travelling?

You get 32" seat pitch (same on Singapore Airlines), winged headrests, footrests, great friendly Australian passenger service, a convenient way to travel, travelling the fastest way to Australia on your specific route rather than stopping over.

Qantas, Air New Zealand - I've always flown Air New Zealand - United Once, Qantas Once..

I'm indifferent on Qantas and Air New Zealand..

United attendants in upper classes are great.. but im sure baggage compartments are more comfortable than united economy.

Plus if you or any one your flying with is in the 18-20 range, u can get free alcohol on NZ/QF.
