Post WTC CGK-SYD-CGK-SYD With SQ & Anthrax Scare

Trip report

Arrivals: 02L by Vectors

After 3 months in CGK, it was time for a quick trip back to SYD. Checked out one of the Lounges available for SQ passengers, and abused myself with food and drinks! Hopped on the SQ flight to SIN & SYD on STZ. A clean piece of machinery. Flight was empty, Capt. Teng was in command for the smooth flight. Nothing exciting in the flight except metal knives, cancelled SID with high speed climb to FL350. Landing to SIN was smooth, except for the long taxi through north cross, pass an Il76 in the process.

After yet again abusing lounge facility (of just peanuts and drinks), I boarded SMT. Somehow I am beginning to hate SQ744s. Cramped, and seats + IFE need severe overhaul. Full flight, not fun! Slept, watched no movies. It was annoying to find out that I was flying over Jakarta after leaving it a few hours before. After hearing position reports on my scanners of SYD & MEL bound flights over Jakarta, I know wished I was still at home listening to position estimates for SQ231. Arriving in Sydney, we entered straight into square base, no downwind, for a visual 34L (I had runway in sight). It was eerie seeing all the AN jets parked on AN terminal and I began to realise how quiet YSSY had become.

After a few days, took a return flight with my lovely lady. We stood in front of SQ counters for a good half hour before they opened (after the 0820 flight left). We were the first to use the Raffles/Star Gold counter only to “realise” that we had 99.4 kgs between us. The check-in guy was puzzled, 4 pieces to be checked in. After negotiating with the station manager, he came back to us, and told us to redistribute the weight of the suitcases (one was over 35 kgs). We did so, and after some stern words from the SQ Station manager, our check-in attendant was extremely polite. We asked for a window and aisle seat, with “B” blocked out. Went in through immigration, and straight to the lounge for free breakfast and phonecalls (I love being spoilt). Heaps of sandwiches, orange juice, peanuts, rice crackers and mineral water went into our stomachs, and also our bags!

The flight was boring again, being a daytime flight, I watched movies all along… forgot which ones. I think flaps up was at 10,000 ft due to speed restrictions. Initially we were at 290, then 330. At Kimberley we climbed to 350, then 390. I was wondering why we got 330 for a westbound flight… had the same thing 3 months before (with FL370 westbound over Ujung Pandang)… A few days before, there was a separation breakdown in the same area involving similar actions! Nice thought.

Descending into SIN, we were immediately gulped by tropical thunderstorms. Breaking the cloud at 6000 feet, we ventured into Malaysian Airspace way deeper than before, only to find out we were dodging tropical cells. An SQ773 (9V-SYE) followed us behind.

Landing into 20R was fine until we touched down. Spoilers up, idle reversers, and wheelbrakes were felt. About halfway down the runway, the wheelbrakes slammed knocking a few pax off guard (I head a few heads hit the window). A few Germans behind me commented, “it must his first landing Ja?” We followed 9V-SYC (B773) and was followed by 9V-SYE. Passing the bridge at South Cross, turned left passed the much touted 9V-SV* 772ER series, and we parked between 9V-SQA and SRB, the other SQ 772 versions.

Went out, picked our “cargo” and headed towards the Singapore Stopover desk.

2 days, we met some friends from Sydney living there, visited model shops, bought some models, had great food, spotted evening departures from afar at Mt. Faber, and the next evening we stood on 02R flightpath on the fence while the 20L SQ heavies took off for their long hauls… It was fun seeing the red hot glow on some of the engines... THE NOISE THE NOISE !

Had a funny argument with the check-in people about our luggage. They wouldn’t let us on with our 94.3 kgs. I told them “the guy in Sydney let me in”.
“Sorry sir, it’s not our policy to allow such a weight”
“Well he knew my ticket was through to Jakarta, does that mean I can get away with carrying such a weight if I don’t make the stopover?”
“Sir, we can’t allow you to check in 95 kilos!”
“Check my luggage weight from Sydney.”
“99.5 kilos”
“So I’ve taken out 5 kgs from a previously allowed baggage on the same ticket and NOW you want to charge me excess baggage, why don’t you charge me the whole trip from Sydney”
“Well we can’t do that”
“why not?”
“Well, if we let you in this time, you’re gonna carry the same weight back to Sydney!”
“I’m moving back to Jakarta, and why would I need 100 kilos for 2 a 2 week visit?”
“OK, we’ll let you in this time, and we’re putting a PNR remark about your luggage weight”
I told them they’ll be lucky if I carry 20kgs on me on the way back.

Nothing exciting until approach. I got a bit lost for a while only to realise that we were abeam of the airport on downwind at 10,000 feet (instead of the usual 2000 to 4000 feet). Spoilers up and we dove into the cloud. A few seconds and several hard bumps later, the pilot retracted the spoilers and went on the PA saying “few minutes delay due to weather not allowing us to descend faster”. Out of the cloud on down wind, a good 20DME away from 07L, we made a 180 turn with spoilers, lost a lot of height, deployed flaps dropped the gear, retracted the flaps, and was on finals at 1500 feet visual. I saw some kites flying around the approach path only to realise we were landing with quite some tail and crosswinds. The last 500 feet down was “exciting” and felt the crosswind crab component as we touched down FAST! Spoilers again, wheelbrakes and lots of reversers. Total landing run (based on the reverse TODA from the exit) was 2900m comparing with the normal 1900m-ish exit. We were on the penultimate exit from 07L. During the long taxi back to the terminal area, a Garuda 737 landed to our right, on 25R ! What a bad slot!

Did the usual stuff with abusing lounges and using phone check-in to reserve my seat. This time, being a travel agent, I asked SQ reservations to check if any restrictions placed on my luggage allowance, and if so could they remove it for me. The “no excess” remark was deleted, and I checked in at the airport with a personally satisfying 12kgs.

Took off 25R, following a EK772 blaring it’s strobes! We took off, made the usual right turn towards PLB, and then we were in cloud. Out strobes picked out the rain droplets like photostills, and boy did we have a ride. Nice to see a few green faces around the cabin (and the crew).

Arriving at SIN, I went to the Premier lounge only to be turned away due to Anthrax suspicions. Great, one of the guys in the room was standing next to me while a CAAS official asked him “sir, how far from the affected lady were you when it all happened?” Yikes!

This plane’s gate was 2 doors down from T1… so I took the skytrain, and did the short walk down back to T2 and the gate. I was told that I was going to fly on SPB tonight, Tsan was told I was going to fly on SMA, and a quick check revealed SPF. Nice to know SQ CRS is very reliable these days!

Window seat on the row for door 3L. sat to a loud englishman. Decided to get a bit drunk and play along with his game so he sleeps quicker!

Approach was FAST. Turned to downwind and a leading stewardess was sitting in front of me, busy calculating duty free receipts. Changed her sandals to shoes (safety regulations). She was in a bad mood, the stewardess on door 3R slept during landing! (I smell trouble).

Touched down 34L, and for a surprise, full reversers. We exited before 25/07 onto Alpha, and onto gate 58.

Ran off the plane, through the immigration express lane, picked up my bag, and got told I would have a full hand search of my luggage (oh bugger!). It was a customs & immigration guy doing it rather that AQIS personnel. He was friendly enough to tell me the story that they’re now checking through EVERYONE, and they randomly pick passengers to get hand searched. Anyway, it was faster than queuing up for the X-ray machine, and I was on an Airport Express bus to the city within 20 minutes!

What a ride! Next trip should be SQ232/162 on 31/oct.
Interesting discovery: All but SQ231/26oct had metal knives served to pax.

Mr. BA,
SQ744 air con were all bloody hot during boarding!
SQA310 air con were all cold during boarding!
Guess which one I prefer boarding on  Smile

The mild argument with the SYD check-in counter was a mild one and took about 1min15 secs... half of which was explaining about the 35kg per suitcase rule.

The SIN argument was about 2 minutes... But then again, I didnt have my stopwatch on...

Trip postponed by 24 hrs, now scheduled on SQ232/1Nov

Nice report there Gerry. Thats quite a few frequent flyer points that you would have accumulated there. Maybe another trip is pending?...
