One of the many great trips I took with CP (there were no bad ones) was when I got to ride in the jumpseat of an F28 from YMM to YEG with Canadian Regional's most senior captain.
Canadian Airlines was the line with which I flew my first trips on an F28, Boeing 737 (PWA days), Boeing 767, and Douglas DC-10. I still remember the sheer awe I had of the size of that DC-10 3 years ago... what a beautiful machine.
I think the best trip I ever took was during my college spring break in February of 2000. I decided to cash in my 15,000 Canadian Plus points for a shorthaul economy ticket from YEG to YVR. At the time of booking, the only flight out near the day I wanted was at 10pm connecting in Calgary (YYC) to a 2:00am departure to YVR. Returning, the closest flight available was 12 days after my break was over. However, I was told that I could stand by for any flight on any day prior to the ticketed departure because I was travelling on Plus points... the only rule was that I had to follow the same routing as on the ticket... YEG-YYC-YVR-YYC-YEG. A day after I arrived in Vancouver (Monday), I was told I needed to be in Calgary that weekend. No problem, I thought, i'd just go to the airport and only use up a portion of my return flight. So late Friday afternoon I headed to YVR to catch whatever plane had room bound for YYC. After about 15 minutes trying to figure out how to make my ticket happen, the agent finally came through and said "ok, when do you want to leave?". At this point, it was about 6pm and I hadn't eaten since much earlier in the day. I asked what she had leaving in about an hour. "7 o'clock is looking pretty full, but i've got loads of room at 7:30... I can even assign you a seat on that one." With no further discussion required, I asked for a window seat on the 7:30 flight and made my way to find some food. It was when I sat down that I took a look at where she had me sitting (I was blindly assuming that my flight was a 737 or an F28)... I was, needless to say, surprised when I saw 34A as the seat assignment. I then checked the flight number. Instead of a 600 series or a 1300 series flight number, it said I was on CP Flight 94. This triggered my curiousity. My questions were answered when I arrived at the gate. The departure board said "CP 94 to Calgary/London Heathrow"... I looked outside and saw a big beautiful DC-10. What a great plane for such a short hop! The seat was huge and the plane was half-empty. And because it was an international flight... the booze was free! By far the best trip from YVR to YYC i'll ever have!
