Expecting very long lines at security at LGA (my uncle is a police officer there and advised 2 hr prior arrival). Arrived at 2:30 for a 4:10 flight. Well, from curbside check in, through security to the gate took all of 15 minutes. Security was obviously stepped up and all were appreciated. I purposely didn't bring any carry on bags to help speed things up. I had not eaten all day so grabbed a table at the small Chili's and had a nice Sam Adams and sandwich. It was great to see many out of town fire departments who had helped out at ground zero. I saw Houston and Milwaukee.

Boarding soon commenced and I took my seat 15E. Pushback was.... on time! We started to taxi out and the pilot announced we were #3 for takeoff. Excuse me, but am I really at LGA? I couldn't believe how fast we got out of there. The whole airport seemed pretty much empty. I recommend traveling the Monday before thanksgiving. As we were holding short of the runway, I saw the American / TWA hybrid color scheme 757 land on the perpendicular runway.

Food service consisted of drinks and snack mix. Flight was very smooth and quick (2:18). Arrival into PBI was early.

Was on the same flight back to NYC as Grandma. Had to get up at 4:30am. Got to the airport at 5:45 for 7:45am flight. Security line was less than 5 minutes. They wanded me down and I had no carry-ons. Waited for the 757 to arrive from LAX/Tampa. It arrived on time. Boarded on time, took off on time, landed early. Food service was granola snack and drinks. Watched spin city / cnn / stuff on the tv monitors.

All in all, a very pleasant trip on Delta. Planes were clean, service was friendly, and considering it was thanksgiving week, no lines at the airports.

Cool trip report. Looks like you enjoyed your trip. I'm from Switzerland and for me is it very hard to understand that an airline offers you only peanuts on a 2hour flight. On a Swissair flight at the same range you can expect at least a sandwich and enough drinks and tea/coffee. Anyway, it is very different

Delta cut their food service rapidly due to the attacks. Its awful, peanuts and drinks on flights up to 4 hours.

Aren't pretty much all the airlines like that now?

LGA Ain't That Bad

Fri Nov 23, 2001 1:16 pm

I live in NYC (assuming you do too), and have noticed that even though there is tougher security at LGA, the time to get to the gate is usually only a little longer than it usually is.
As for #3 for departure, try to beat #1 the last two times I flew out of LGA. I try to get flights before 12PM. I take the Delta flight to ATL at 11:00AM sometimes, and the captain usually tries to get out of the gate 10-15 minutes before the actually gate departure time, because he says it's pretty open before 11, then it gets heavier.

The only time I dread flying out of LGA is late-afternoon. The M60 bus ride out there is horrible, and then there are so many delays.

I've never actually taken the M60 to LGA. My parents live about 10 minutes from LGA so I usually take the LIRR to Bayside and then they just drive me.

My flight left at 4pm which is why I thought it was unusually empty. And, we didn't cut infront of a big takeoff line either, there weren't any other planes on the tarmac.

Damn... do you take the LIRR from Penn to Bayside? That must be pretty long, and expensive at the least (less than a cab though). If you're coming from the city, you should just take the 1/2/3/9/A/C/D/4/5/6 to 125th Street (each stops at their respective avenue) and take the M60. It's only $1.50 with the free XFERS, and many ppl bring suitcases on etc...
There is a bus about every 10 minutes during rush hours, and 15-20 off hours. The bus takes about 20 minutes, and stops at every terminal (including marine air) and the train takes about 10 minutes from Midtown. I've made this trip in about an hour most times.

Anyway, yea 4 PM is a weird time not to have many a/c departing. Maybe you left at like 3:55 before all the 4PM flights (kinda like with me and the 11AM). I know that about 5 PM flights really start to pick up.

I take the LIRR to bayside because my parents live near there and they want me to visit. So, i hang out at home for a few hours and then they drive me to the airport.

I could also take the F to 179st (last stop) and have them pick me up too.

By the way, when we took off we flew over my house in fresh meadows which was very cool.

Really? Fresh Meadows... where about if I might ask. My grandparents live on 183rd and 69th.

BTW - I hate 179th on the F. It always smells.

NorthwestCRJ, flights from LGA-PBI, PBI-LGA are only about 2 hours flying time. Where on earth did you come up with 4 hours--that would have to be on a DC-4???
