This was my first flight to LAX, and my first flight on the new Horizon CRJ700. I arrived at the Boise airport just after 4:00pm to check in as a standby passenger on the non-stop flight to Los Angeles. Check-in was fast and easy and then I proceeded to the security checkpoint. I was about the tenth in line and cleared security in only about two minutes. After I passed through security I walked to the Subway to talk to a couple of friends, and then I went down to gate A7 for the departure. Boarding began at 5:08 and I was cleared onto the flight in seat 2D at about 5:19. I boarded the aircraft via a steep boarding ramp (Horizon does not use the aircraft stairs to board the RJ700s in Boise). I was surprised to find that 2D was an aisle, with no C seats on the plane. I took the seat and when the door was closed (at 5:30) I slid over to 2E so I could have the window. The biggest change I noticed from the RJ200s was that the windows are actually eye level and you don’t have to strain your neck to see out. Takeoff was at 5:39 and the take off roll was a quick 23 seconds on runway 10L. After a bumpy climb our flight attendants Lisa and Ralph served potato chips, a chocolate chip cookie, fruit mix and drinks. Approach into LAX was interesting because it was overcast and the clouds were lit up by the lights below. I also saw no less than 30 aircraft climbing through the clouds out of LAX. We landed at 6:36 and arrived to the gate at 6:42pm. We deplaned via a jetway where I waited for a gate checked bag. After getting my bag I took the LAX Shuttle over to terminal five for my Delta flight to Honolulu.

I was the third person in line for coach check-in and it took twenty-five minutes to get to the counter. I was given a “seat-request” pass and checked my bag to Honolulu. I then went to security where I had only about a 30 second wait. Once I reached the gate I checked the large TV monitor that show the standby and cleared list. I was shown on the cleared list at 7:55pm for seat 5E (FIRST CLASS!) I was selected for the “RANDOM” (or not so random) security screening and I was searched with a hand wand and my carry-on bag was searched. Once I cleared the security check I boarded the aircraft. I was surprised that we boarded at the second door and I had to turn left to reach my seat (I don’t fly large planes a lot) I took my seat which was an aisle beside the window on the right side of the airplane. I was welcomed aboard by a flight attendant who offered me a drink—water if you must know. We pushed out from the gate at 8:26pm and a safety video was shown during taxi out. We took runway 25L and had a 38 second takeoff roll. Once we were airborne we climbed up to 32,000 feet and started our long journey. Just before dinner we were offered a HOT towel—it was really hot! Next the flight attendants covered the tray tables with linens and we were served a choice of Steak, Salmon, or Chicken. I had the steak which was very good and came with veggies, a salad with RANCH! (wow not some honey mustard airline dressing). After dinner, the flight attendants came through with an ice cream sundae with my choice of Carmel, or Chocolate topping and nuts with whipped cream. The first class seats have personal pop-out video screens and I watched Legally Blonde and Rat Race during our flight. Just before landing the flight attendants collected our agriculture forms for our arrival. We landed a few minutes late due to the headwinds that were indicated at up to 130 miles per hour on the SkyShow. We arrived gate 21 and the luggage beat me to the claim area!
I spent the morning of the 3rd at the Arizona Memorial where the 60th anniversary of Pearl Harbor was being observed.

After a morning at Pearl Harbor I took a hotel shuttle back to the Honolulu Airport to check in for my flight to Lihue, Kauai.
Hawaiian Airlines Flight 171

I was welcomed to Hawaiian Airlines with another random security search—this one actually helped me! I got to cut in front of the entire line for boarding I was surprised that Hawaiian has open seating in coach for all interisland flights. I took seat 22A in the new, clean cabin. It was on the 2 side of the 2X3 seating. The flight was announced as a short 18 minutes and soon we were airborne after a 29 second takeoff roll. We were offered a little cup of juice—which was VERY good! Soon we began our descent and one of the most incredible approaches I’ve ever experienced. We came in over a mountain and then they dumped the flaps and a sharp turn lined us up with the runway. The flight was short but enjoyable!

After a day of the beach I returned to the Lihue Airport to begin my journey home.
Aloha Airlines Flight 124

I checked in for my first Aloha flight where I was informed that I had been selected for a random security check—What a surprise!
I passed through security quickly and had lunch at a snackbar in the airport. I sat near a window and saw an Aloha 737-200 and a Hawaiian 717 arrive. As the flight began to board I was screened AGAIN, and then I boarded to take seat 15A. This cabin was a disappointment as it was OLD, Dirty, and had ugly light blue leather seats. As we took off I was wishing I had ear plugs as it was so noisy! We were offered Coke or Diet Coke on our 20 minute flight which was uneventful and fast.
I then transferred to the mainland/international terminal where I underwent the required agriculture inspection and checked in for my flight back to the mainland.

I went to the gate and was given the now routine security check and then I boarded the plane to my first class seat. We pushed at 11:24 and after a 41 second takeoff roll we were airborne. In first class we were served a Chef’s Salad with a dinner roll and a lemon cake. It was good—but not as good as the salmon. We climbed to 33,000 feet and I fell asleep. I awoke in turbulence over Reno, Nevada to find we had climbed to 37,000 feet and then we dropped back to 33,000 feet for turbulence. The sun rose and we landed in SLC after 5 hours and 52 minutes in flight. (It took 5 hours 38 minutes to go from LAX-HNL) We arrived gate D8 and I headed for cinnabon for breakfast. I then proceeded to the E concourse for the flight home.

I was paged to the podium at 9:45 and asked what my seat preference was. I was assigned 8A—a window on the exit row. We had a long taxi taking off from the runway after a 29 second roll. I fell asleep shortly after takeoff and I slept until we began our descend. The weather in Boise was horrible with heavy snow and low visibility. We landed on runway 10R after an ILS approach and then we taxied to gate 14. It was a nice trip but I was happy to be home! And my bags even made it with me!
