My Flight To America On AirNZ From New Zealand

Mon Jan 14, 2002 7:31 am

Hi this flight took place on the 18th of June 2001

I flew from Napier to Auckand in a Air New Zealand Saab 340A at 5:10 pm and it was a scheduled 1 hr 10 min flight we took off and I had a read of the skywatch magazine. We took off and we were given some orange juice and a biscuit. We flew for about 50 minutes and were told that we were on final and the Air Hostess was told to take her seat. At around 6:00 we had a very smooth landing. I then went to the International terminal and had some McDonalds and had a look around the shops. By now it was time to go through security and get my boarding pass. I waited next to my plane for about another 1 hour and we were finally told to board the plane at about 9:30

The plane was an Air New Zealand 747-400 to Los Angeles and I was on flight 2. I was the first one on the plane and I took my seat. I had a window seat mid plane and on the right hand side of the Aircraft. I read all the magazines that I had on me. I waited another hour before I finally heard the roar of the engines. The flight was delayed about an hour and a half I’m not sure why I think it was to wait for a late passenger. We then had to take to a runway to the north. We were cleared for takeoff and we had a very long take-off roll it seemed that we were nearly at the end of the runway. After about ¾ to an hour we had levelled off. The Air Hostess came around with our dinner. I had already eaten dinner so I didn’t have anything. I had a lot of coke etc and one of the men airhostesses told me off for drinking so much. I then watched some reasonable movies for about 6 hrs. I can’t get to sleep in planes and I was getting very frustrated. All of the lights in the cabin were turned off during the flight. After about another 2 hours I could see light. We were then offered breakfast. It was an omlit with bacon and onion and also a glass of fruit juice and some fruit salad. I still couldn’t sleep so I read some books. By this time I was getting very board so I went to the toilet. I wish I had of asked if I could go and see the cockpit. With about another 2 hours to go we started to descend and with ½ an hour to go we were told to do up our seatbelts and get ready for landing. It was a very fine day when we went over Los Angeles and I was amazed at how big it was we were flying over it for about ¾ of an hour. The Air Hostess handed out Air New Zealand Lollies to stop our ears hurting. When we were on final and about 1 minute from landing I could feel the pilot pulling back the throttle and we had to do a go-around we proceeded to the north and made a sharp turn to the right. The go around took about ¾ of an hour and it was a good way to see the sights of Los Angeles the Captain said that there was another plane that hadn’t left the runway in time. While we were flying over the airport I was amazed at how big the airport was and I saw so many planes. We then had an uneventful landing I was so excited because I want to be an Airline pilot when I get older. After what seemed about half an hour of taxiing we were towed to our terminal. While this was going on I was watching all sorts of planes taking off and I thought I was in heaven. I was one of the last ones of the plane. The flight took about 13 hours including the go around. I was so tired from not getting any sleep. I had about 3 ½ hours until my next flight.

LAX was a huge place and I was amazed at how many Mexicans worked there. I was only 14 at the time so I was an unaccompanied minor. So I had a an Air New Zealand Hispanic man who didn’t speak much English take me to my next terminal. He pushed his way through customs. I couldn’t find my luggage and I was very worried. It turns out It was the last off the plane. I was given to 2 men of African origin from United Airlines and I was put on buses and I made my way to the United terminal. They took me into the Unaccompanied minor lounge with to other kids no older than ten. United gave me free McDonalds (doesn’t taste as good as it does in New Zealand). Then two very friendly ladies took me to my departure lounge. I waited for about ten minutes.

I boarded a United 757 to Seattle and we taxied to the holding bay. We were cleared to take off and after about 30 minutes of climbing the seatbelt light came off and the air hostesses came around with some lunch. It was two sandwiches and also a biscuit. I was amazed that you actually had to pay for alcohol on United. This is not so on Air New Zealand. We flew for about 3 hours and then I could see the beautiful Seattle scenery as we flew by. We landed without any hassles. It was about 10:00 Seattle time when we landed I was amazed that it was still light. I had just come from the winter of New Zealand now to cold to the Hotness of Los Angeles and the less hot Seattle. The flight took about 3 and ½ hours

The people I was staying with met me and we drove home.

Ps. IF you have got this far you have done well. This is my first trip report. I hope I didn’t bore you too much. If you want I will be more than happy to write you the return leg. I’m sorry it took so long. Any advice, compliments or criticism will be greatly appreciated.

Hi airnz,

Interesting report!

A few details you might be interested in..

The aircraft was ZK-NBU. It was scheduled to depart at 2045, but actually departed at 2101. Delay was due to ATC/ground movement control (9 minutes) and DC lines automated equipment failure (7 mins). It arrived into LAX at 14:09, 24 minutes late.

There were 359 passengers on board, and the trip used 129,000kg of fuel.

Keep 'em coming!  Smile
