After a long wait, I finally have time to do this report

Date: - 12/12/01
Flight: - CX250
Aircraft: - Boeing 747-467 (B-HOX) ‘Spirit of Hong Kong 2000’
Seat: - 58G
Departure time: - 18:05 (pushback 18:22) (takeoff 18:37)
Arrival time: - 14:00 (actual 14:35)
Flight time: - 11:13
Flight Level: - FL275>300>330>365>390

I arrived in Heathrow at 2pm, but I have to wait for my sister who has been hold up by her boyfriend, which woke up late. I wonder why someone travels from Cardiff would actually arrive early than someone from Portsmouth! So I put my luggage in the storage area in arrivals and went to the top of Queens Building for some spotting. The first thing I seen is Pokemon from ANA (JA8962), I quickly get my camera and got a shot. When I travel up to the top of the platform, I looked out the engineering department and at my surprise; one of the Cathay aircraft is B-HOX, ‘Spirit of Hong Kong’, I have long wanted to see this aircraft and I finally see it. I also seen many different other aircraft, include BG DC10, MS A300, SU A310 and AC330, it was fun. After that, I went to the shop downstairs to the aviation shop and bought some magazines, I went back up again and to my surprise, B-HOX is on tow to gate, and instantly, I know it would be used on my flight, since CX never use 2 gates together in Heathrow.
At 16:45, just under an hour before departure, I get back down to check in and seen the Captain (He is called Mr Hugwell), I shake hand with him and have a short chat about aviation. Today’s flight consists of four-crew member Captain, 2 First Officers and a Second Office. My sister arrived just before 17:00; we start to join the quere, later on, the ground crew let all those passengers on CX250 to jump though. By the time we checked in, we have been told that there are no window seat, we got allocate to 58 G/H.
We quickly went though security quickly and bought a bottle of red wine in duty free for granddad and rush to gate 33, the gate at the far end of terminal, aircraft next to us to MH 744 and a KU 340. As soon as we arrived, there were a very long quere developed, we didn’t join it till late. As soon we get in, the FA direct us into our seats and we got 2 young teenage girl seat next to us, but it is nowhere near good experience, they are those boarding students returning home, the only thing I heard is she called me a ‘bastard’ in Cantonese! This 2 little devil have talked about how they dye their hair and their boyfriends and other gossips, and they have been talking about these for the whole flight! Pushback occurs at 18:22, since we missed our first slot at 18:08. Safety demonstration was done whilst taxiing. At 18:37, we started our long take off roll, which lasted 40 seconds. Entertainment started once seat belt sign is off, the first thing I seen is TVB News, a good surprise, but we have not got the famous Studio CX with video on demand. Juice were passed to passengers and menu were given, tonight’s choice is Chicken with Noodles and Fish with rice, both were very good especially for a person who have not eat and drink a single thing since breakfast! I quickly mine and helping my sister to finish hers. Refreshment was available afterwards and I only take water, since I have those Brace on my teeth.
Not long afterwards I started to look at the ‘airshow’ channel, we were just passed Scandinavia and facing headwind of 130 knots, then the Captain came on tannoy and said we expect to be 45 minutes late because of a different routing (avoid Middle East) and the headwind, he didn’t said much since. After that, I turned to the channel, which shows Chinese movie, to my disappointment, it is a tedious movie mixing between Kung Fu and football starring Stephen Chow, and to my further disappointment, it is the most sold out movie in Hong Kong in 2001. I changed the channel and watched something about windsurfing in Hawaiian island that is really good, since I also windsurf. Then I saw a Disney Cartoon about a cat and its adventure on the street. After that, I slept for a while and when I briefly woke up, I went to get some water and have got some good turkey sandwich, watched Simpson, the one where Bart has get kicked out form school and being exchanged to France, whilst an Albanian ‘spy kid’ have exchange to the Simpson family, Bart nearly got killed in France! Afterwards, I watched a bit of CNN before my eyes gave up again. Quite a few hours later, we are already close to Eastern Russia and we are enjoying a 160-knot tailwind! And we are cruising at 1050km/h.
By the time I woke up again, we are over Mongolia, soon afterwards, breakfast was served, I choose the Chinese breakfast with Chow Mein and drinks were severed afterwards. By then I have walked round the aircraft and have a chat with a senior FA though I didn’t even bother ask for a jumpseat. Not long afterwards, we are over the airspace of Hong Kong, we got a very bumpy ride into Hong Kong, we flew over Junk Bay, Sha Tin, and Tsang Yi and landed at runway 25R, which include a very bumpy ride with strong crosswind we seen the wing flex, we used full thrust reverse when we land and stop at the last exit turn! Few minutes longer we taxied to gate 46 and parked there. Both the cabin crew and the Captain thanked us for flying Cathay Pacific and the Captain apologised again for the delay. It take us quite a while to get our luggage and finally I was picked up by my parents, home sweet home, my first step in Hong Kong for the first 15 month.
I paid £685 in a bucket shop in Leicester Square in July cause my mum have been told by my next door neighbour that ticket is hard to get (they have 8 of them!!). At the end, the 3 children and the elderly along with an adult (Frequent flyer of VS) took VS, whilst the other 3, which is in early 20’s and middle age took a transfer flight with LH. Our plan would be taking the same VS flight with them though that didn’t materialised, so we book CX instead. I thought I paid a reasonable price until 11/9 comes along, if I ordered after that, I would save at least £200, Oh well, it is still great value for money.

Overall: -
Food 8/10: - (I like the chicken pasta and turkey sandwich)
Entertainment 6/10: - That tedious Chinese movie spoils it all, and, where is Studio CX?
Crew 9/10: - Friendly and attentive crew and an exciting landing.
Aircraft 8/10: - Very well maintained aircraft with little visible fault, tidy throughout.
Price 7/10: - £685, but it is pre 11/9.
Total 38/50: - A big improvement since I flew with them last time, keep it up!!

The three weeks I spend in Hong Kong were very busy, eating, partying with friends and family, include meeting with HKGSpotter1, N949WP and other spotters in Chek Lap Kok, we spend a nice afternoon together. The ‘winter’s’ meal in grandma’s place, where for the first time since 94, we have everybody together, barbecue party in dad’s fire station in Christmas Eve and the visit to Tai o on Christmas day. I also visited the trade fair in Admirty and fun fair in Hung Hum. The weather in Hong Kong is excellent throughout my stay and we have a great time together as a family.

Date: - 4/1/04
Flight: - CX251
Aircraft: - Boeing 747-467 (B-HOU)
Seat: - 62F
Departure time: - 23:55 (pushback 00:25) (takeoff 00:32)
Arrival time: - 4:55 (actual 5:07)
Flight time: - 12:45
Flight Level: -260>300>330>390

All good things must come to the end, after 3 weeks of intensive eating ranges from Fish-ball to shark fin soap, travelling from Sai Kung to Cheung Chau. We got there at 8:00pm, checked in Chek Lap Kok with Cathay is quick, they now have a dedicated check in area for all those who travelling to USA and it was packed with people going to SFO and LAX. Afterwards, I join my dad for a quick run to an aunt in Tung Chung and bid goodbye with them. We went back to CLK, bought some magazines and after some chatting with my family; it is time to move on. I know it would take me longer to go though immigration since I am exiting from Hong Kong with a provisional ID card (piece of paper), since I just changed mine because I am 18. It takes quite a while since I need to fill in different forms, but eventually, I am done. I walked to Gate 4, and seen our aircraft tonight B-HOU, Gate 5 is B-HUF (I think) to LA, Gate 3 is B-HOS to Paris CDG, Gate 2 is A340 B-HXD to Amsterdam and Gate 1 is ‘me’ B-HOP also heading to Heathrow as CX255. Boarding was quick and we push back slightly late due to passengers missing. We push back and 00:25 and took off behind the Paris flight, whilst an Australian flight (CX A330) was behind us.
The take off roll is very very long, it nearly took us the whole runway for it, and we circled round Hong Kong during our climb. I didn’t remember a lot from the flight since I have slept throughout and I didn’t have a lot of the meal since I have a big one before I went to the airport, the meal is chicken and fish with some raw salmon as dessert, comparatively, the meal I had at home compose vegetables (Choi Sum) fried beef and Roast Pork (Siu Yok), so I Didn’t eat a lot. I didn’t see any of the in-flight entertainment either since I am very sleepy. I slept throughout till breakfast and I choose the Western one, the quality is fair, not bad but not excellent. We landed at Heathrow 5:09 in the morning and it take us ages to pick our luggage up. I walked outside, took the tube to Paddington and returned to Cardiff. I did not remember a lot from this flight but it is still a good experience.
Overall, I won’t hesitate to suggest anybody to fly with CX, it have mastered the service area and have overtaken Virgin, once the market leader and I should choose to travel CX again if Virgin deferral their 340-600, which due to put in HK route in the summer. Furthermore, CX have nicer passenger, less of those boarding students and take away family chain, both annoying that they never stop talking!

P.S: - Singapore_Air, I think we CX provided what SQ have provided, so don’t start throwing on me about pre order meal and Krisflyer cause I think CX would have it sooner or later!!!
Overall: -
Food 7/10: - Is good but not good enough compare to mum!
Entertainment 7/10: - I didn’t really see a lot though
Crew 8/10: - Friendly and attentive crew.
Aircraft 8/10: - Very well maintained aircraft with little visible fault, tidy throughout.
Price 7/10: - £685, but it is pre 11/9.
Total 37/50, Overall 75/100: - I think I would fly them in June if Virgin didn’t take their 346.

Very good report, i always like a good Catahy report  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
I flew the exact same flight (CX250) in December '99 then flew CX111 to Sydney on a A340. We were lucky enbough to experiance Cathay Pacific's Business Class. I was in seat 14A for CX250 and i must say it was the best flight of my life. I love Catahy pacific and next time i fly to Asia i will definatley pay the extra to fly my favourite Asian airline.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I don't normally read CXA trip reports, however I decided to read yours as it has the word "long" in it, so it must have been good.

"I think we CX provided what SQ have provided, so don’t start throwing on me about pre order meal and Krisflyer cause I think CX would have it sooner or later!!! " - The comment completely bemuses me. Do I have some kind of reputation with CXA fans?

Anyway, it was a well-written and intriguing trip report.

Thank you for a good report.
I am looking forward to my Cathey flight the 8th of april.

I am going to fly Gothenburg Lanvetter-London Hearthow- HongKong -Kuala Lumpur 8th of april.
I paid 850u$ for the tickett and that is slightly more then SIA, MAS or KLM but not that much.
This price do also include a SAS flight from Gothenburg to London. BA or CX don´t fly from Gothenburg.

Have flewn SIA one time before from Kuala Lupur to
Beijing. I will for sure produce a report. All the times (2 so far this is my third) I have been down to Kuala Lumpur I have flewn KLM since I am a member of flying dutchman. But after flying SIA from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing(last time in malaysia) I got a taste for asian airlines  Smile

This will be a enjoyable trip in many ways.
I am going down to Kuala Lumpur to marry my fiancee
a chinese malaysian.
So if the flight will be a royal treatment it will be
double happiness for me.
