I arrived with my family to Helsinki Aiport around 21.00, only to find out that our flight was delayed for half-an-hour. We checked in swiftly, and were told that we would get our seat assigments at the gate since we were flying stand-by. The economy section of the Md-11 was reserved solely for a finnish tour group, so the only seat available were in business class. The plane featured the extended business class, so all customers with Finnair economy class tickets, not tickets issued by the tour group, where seated on rows 6 and 7 featuring business class seating but economy class service. As boarding started to come to an end we were called up, and my family were given seats on row 1, me on 1C.
I boarded the aircraft and was shown to my seat by the purser. A pre-departure drink cart was set up at the front of the cabin. As soon as i was seated and settled in, champagne, orange juice or water were offered in real glasses ofcourse. Before take off the menus and winelists were offered. The menuwas as follows:
Jumbo Prawns with banana salsa
Grilled Fillet of Lamb with marinated vegetables
a lighter choice of Cream of Celery Soup and/or Herb Flavoures Chicken Salad
Charcoal grilled salmon with chive saunce
wok sauteed julienne of celery and green beans
Chicken medalions with coconut sauce
saffron rice with siitake mushrooms, green beans
Panfried filet of elk, rowanberry sauce
wild mushrooms risotto, duchesse of spinach and yellow carrots

Papaya with Mango kissel
Fresh Fruit Salad
Country style omelette

After take off the flight attendants came around with amenity kits, which could be later used as a neck pouch thing..the contents were a bit dissapointing, a shoehorn, socks and a eyemask. After tha amenity kits hot cotton towels were handed out before cocktail serivice.
I ordered a Gin Tonic, and i got it with a small assortment of canapees, rye bread with smetana and roe of whitefish and white bread with somesort of a patee and olives. both very tasty Soon after the table was set, with a cloth places ontop. My appetizer choice was jumbo prawns and it was quite tasty, the salsa being suprisingly bananaish The appetizer came on a tray with the seasonal salad, real silver wear (including a real knife) and small salt and pepper shakers. After my appetizer was cleared away, my choice of chicken medallions were brought piping hot and placed on the tray. The chicken was tasty but kinda, tasted like airplane chicken, but not that much. As i was very hungry i finished the whole serving anyhow. during the mealservice, a bread basket, containing, buns, rye bread, garlic bread and oat rye crackers was offered on numerous occasions, like wise the FA´s came around the cabin constanly with champagne, white and red wine.
The Champagne was very good, so i stuck with it for the whole dinner, only having port with the cheese plate, which featured 3 cheeses ; brie, edam and something really creamy...Fruit and crackers were offered with the cheeses. Once the cheese plate was cleared away, they rolled out the desert cart, with coffee , tea, cognac and ofcourse the deserts.
The punch Parfait was plated by your seat and offered with hot chocolate brandy sauce, but my choice, the extremly delicious, Papaya with Mango kissel was preplated. When the FA´s finished clearing the cabin , i started flipping thru the PTV which featured 11 channels, 8 movie and 3 other ones (comedy lifestyle, sports) aswell as 6 games and information about Finnair and Oneworld. Waterbottles and noicecancelling headsets were found in the seat pocket.
The Seat itself was very comfrotable with a good recline and lumbar support. And after dinner almost everyone went to bed as blankets and pillows were handed out. I on the otherhand decided to visit the lavaratories, which featured, cloth towels, razors,shaving cream, tootbrushes, toothpaste, Biotherm Lotions and Lancôme Fragrances.
During the night the FA´s constantly walked the ailes of the totally dark cabin offering more water bottles or a movie snacks; chips, chocolates and candybars - sandwiched were also available in three flavours : vegetable, chicken and salmon. Also espresso, cappucino, tea and normal coffee were available thruout the flight.
I managed to get a few hours sleep and after waking up, i decided to take a stroll to the back and was very suprised to see that the economy cabin had new interiors. Gone was the dark blue floors and curtains, which were now light grey, the seats had gotten new seat covers featuring shades of blue spiced up with a bit of red. Economy passengers also had redheadsets and blankets. Vey fresh, and i think it´ll work good with the new uniforms. Economy also had the "snack bar" in the rear galley, featuring soup, fruit ,candy and various drinks. I also noticed economy aswell had indvidual water bottles, although smaller than the ones handed out in business.
I got back to my seat and watched a bit of "Rat Race" as i waited for breakfast service to start. And soon enough it did with hot towels...Breakfast was served on a tray featuring the salad and the omelette...a tad disspointing, but it filled me up, juices and warm bread were offered throughout breakfast, along with coffee and tea.
Soon after we started our decent to Bangkok after a mere 10 hour flight from Helsinki.
After touchdown, jackets were distributed and the crew said there goodbye as we exited the plane and headed thru immigration and customs to Hua Hin for a week at the beach.
